hey guys

finally got to mess with the 977 i drove it up the hill and tried to push some brush loose stuff had some trees down .

it seems like the clutch is slipping is the only way to describe it .i know there are several disks and metal bands in the clutches

could it be out of adjustment or do you guys think i need to rebuild the clutch packs

it snaps in then gradually it will start pulling till its locked in all the way .

it seems like slippage to me .i operated it for about an hour .it should push a lot stronger than this i would think .

EDIT
ok i think im on to something here transmission oil needs to be at 100psi and i need tdto spec oil
i didnt check the tranny oil i will in the morning .
i may have a bad oil pump or just low on oil or possible clogged filter
at any rate can anyone tell me the oil capacity and the correct weight of the oil i need to put in this tractor

EDIT
I have done some research it looks like 977 20a transmission oil is going to be TDTO spec 30wt oil at 42 quarts 10,5 gal

any help is greatly appreciated

I think you located a transmission number, not the actual tractor s/n which should start with the 20A prefix.
Where are you getting this transmission oil pressure requirement from (100 psi??) There isn't a transmission pressure gage involved.
Are you describing steering clutch slippage or main clutch slippage? The oil clutch has a suction strainer at the bottom of the housing that should be checked. You could try adjusting the steering clutches but you may be facing replacement.
Seems you have figured out the oil replacement requirements.

i was just researching the pressure requirement on the net it said needs at least 100psi to fully engage if not it will go into a bypass mode.
main clutch is not engaging .it seems like it snaps in but it doesn't fully engage till the transmission and engine speed match
its a little hard to describe
sometimes it never engages at all like the brake is on .it bogs the engine some ill snap it out and let the engine rev and pull it back in and it will take off

steering clutches seem to work and brakes work steering is hard tho
like steering a car with no fluid in the power steering pump

i gota find that serial number i need the filter for the transmission and a few other parts .track pins and a couple links

thank you old magnet

Seems you are mixing powershift information with your direct drive. Oil clutch oil pressure is only like 5 psi pressure or so. It's function is just to circulate oil for the lubrication and cooling. There is no transmission filter.

There is a transmission brake (external) that may be dragging. Should only function when you push the clutch release lever all the way forward. There is an adjustment procedure if you find that is the problem. The oil clutch itself is adjustable and depends on the adjustment clamps to hold position.

Check the fluid level in the steering clutch booster.

technically CHARLESCAT933 is correct in a earlier post to this thread. granted with two 12 volt batteries wired to 24 volt you will not gain in amps draw per hour. where you will gain is the amount of work being done at 24 volt requires half the amp load as a 12 volt system. if a 12 volt starter draws 200 amps to start an engine a 24 volt starter will draw 100 amps to start the same engine.

Booster is under the seat tank. Oil fill is at the back.

I wonder if the steering clutch adjustment is too tight and they are both trying to disengage together until the oil starts to warm and they don't disengage quite so much, this situation will also give you very difficult steering.

the first owners were a couple lockheed martin retires they were going into farming
they quickly found out that farming was hard work haha .
Roger said after a while they sold off all there equipment .
