Reviving another old relic - D9G

Maybe someone had overheating problems and tried to fix by removing one thermostat. Can be counter productive allowing coolant to flow too quickly in some aplications.

Half the "mechanics" around here would pull them out as part of preventative maintenance haha

Thanks Rome and Deas, I'll keep that in mind and get 2 new thermostats up next week, Install them, have a test run and see how we go.

Next step, if this dosn't work, i suppose is rod the radiator... really didn't want to do that...

Cheers

Bit of an update. The flush and new pressure relief valve made a small difference in that it would cool down a lot quicker then before, however after about 2 hours it was still getting hot. Right, top tank off to have a look inside. What a job, to access the front row of tank bolts the rad has to come out. Couldn't get it past the fan crossbrace so had to loosn the cowling and slide that back but got it enough to get at at them.

I think i may have found my problem.....

Also noticed a bit of damage to the sprocket. Have to do a bit of research on it but i'm thinking the furthest back roller isn't running it onto the sproket straight. Not sure yet, I'll fix the rad first, then deal with it.

Hi, Misterskill.
WoooooHoooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No wonder the poor girl was raising a sweat. I suspect she has been run on a steady diet of dirty water and no corrosion inhibitor for many a long year.

A good, straight, long length of steel packing case strap might help in cleaning out those tubes. There is a LOTTTTT of crud in there.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Valentines day = Hot date with a radiator and a band-saw blade

It had coolant or corrosion inhibitor when i got it, but yeah, maybe too late.

Hi Ms,
well, that is up there for the most clogged tubes I have come across, the old girl will thank you for some cooler coolant by working hard for longer.

Scan below may help with T/Frame Alignment.

There are shims inside the Outer Bearing Housing Cap to centralise the T/Frame on these--see Service Manual and Parts Book.

Cheers,
Eddie B.

For the benefit of our topside readers, what kind of 'hot' are you expecting on Valentine's Day in your part of the world? Maybe around 42 - 45 degrees C.?

MS, now that your getting to the final stages of reviving the D9 and you’ve said the famous Cat quote “it’s turned out to be a bigger job than expected.”

You got any plans of reviving another relic after this one is finished? We all sure have enjoyed fallowing your frustrations and admiring your progress. We’re gonna be lost when your finished. So please continue to keep your eye on another project for your followers. :tea:

Actually been a very docile February. 36, 34, 37, 40 for the next few days. Had a lot of rain this year, almost 100mm already. Grass everywhere, might even get some wildflowers this year.

Hey Slick,

It certainly has, i'll just be stoked (my wallet will be too!) when the big stuff is over for a while and it's just oil and filter changes for a bit. Although i have got an oil leak from one of the final drives. Praying it's just a leak from sitting for so long and keeping an eye on it.

There are a few dead D9H around the place, once i get some money together again i'm tossing up trying to get one of them for parts. Just far easier for availability with things like oil coolers and the later style cooling fan and all the brackets and stuff should bolt onto mine.

Next, I've got a car i need to get going again. But if i do another CAT it will be a D2, or something i can do over concrete in the shed with a block and tackle!

Wowza.... some serious dirt in there..... got clean her out so she can start to use those fins for some cooling.... Great job on getting her straightened out... I know first hand these big girls need a lot of love.... I ran my d9g yesterday and she started getting a little hot... I will do a couple things to her as well... Your sprocket teeth look a little straight and one is missing a chunk of metal out of it.... You know that took a bite out of her to do that.... Might need to replace the sprockets... But one thing at a time... Been there done that.... But boy when she works she can work.... It is worth it anyway..... Cheers and keep up the good work....

Worn "snakey" rails will chip the sprockets out when turning sharp.
