I am not familiar with this exact machine. Is there any way to turn this engine other than the turning tool that fits in the starter hole. This procedure can't be done with the starter.

Not easily. Pipe wrench on the front PTO on the engine? getting down and crawling under is going to be a pain by yourself though

I'm not sure that's going to work on the D9G. That device has a SAE #3 flange but the starter conversions use a much larger bolting flange.

You can turn the fan blade but it is counter clockwise what we did for tc 1 was turn the flywheel past the mark then bump the starter then pry the flywheel to the mark. It is difficult because we need to verify tc for each cylinder and now that we know the flywheel is off we need to verify her highest stroke... We did get lash on both intake and exhaust for #1 and are confident we have Tc. However removing the starter and inserting the engine turning tool is ideal... If you recall I removed the old starter so I have an extra... I wonder if I can modify that somehow to use just the mounting bracket and purchase basically the pinion....

Happy Thanksgiving everybody... I hope everyone is enjoying their time with their love ones.....

Yes, it is possible to modify an old starter to fabricate a "turning tool".

I just remembered that King of Obsolete fabricated something like that. Perhaps he will post a photo for you, George.

How about one of these . Looks like you would need to make the mounting flange or a guide up yourself.

My engine turning tool is in 2 parts and is a fair chunk of iron, the 1 lump bolts to the mounting flange and has a hole in it's centre that you insert the drive dog to engage with the flywheel, it has a square drive on the end to take a ratchet or drive bar and is a great gizmo to have on engine work, I cannot recall what I paid for it but I have had it possibly 40 years. tctractors

The service manual has it listed as:

2P8300 Engine Turning Tool Group
2P8294 Housing
2P8299 Pinion.

Theses numbers when put into google does not come up with anything and is not cross referenced with any new part #.. Going to CAT for these old tools is crazy expensive... To set the pump lifters off the tractor the tool group for that which is in a set was over $7,000.000 Crazy....

If anyone comes across a new part number for aftermarket that would work best... I can turn the fan blade but that is not precision and in my opinion not acceptable... So we will figure it out... Thanks everyone...

If you have an old starter, you have the basis of a good turning tool!

Remove solenoid and spring to allow manual shift and then motor housing and brush rig to expose armature.

Bolt to flywheel housing, shift drive into mesh with flywheel and turn armature with an oil filter strap wrench. If you want to turn engine backwards you'll have to block the drive in extension and weld it up somehow as it will not turn the engine backward due to the design of the internal clutch.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D
