Replied by ol Grump on topic Injector pumps
Have you checked the injector pumps for the correct lift/adjustments yet?

I haven’t seen a video from Squatch253 showing the adjustment yet but it’s probably coming soon. The main thing is you need a depth micrometer to measure about 1-3/4 depth. Most will have different probes you can swap out to get the various depth ranges but that’s the one you need (1”-2”)

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

How oily are the exhaust passages?

All ports completely dry soot, no greasy feel at all.

What ever is going on it appears correct combustion is going on most of the time so the ports reflect that. It's still a mix of blue and white smoke so some some oil is getting in there along with possible fuel/capsule issues. Capsule check would be the next logical step, followed by injection pump setting verification.

Hi Team,
Toby has recently put this #34 up
for his D3400 Engine.

I thoroughly recommend that every one should watch ALL of Toby's Tutorials on his D3400 engine as they are full of good practice and data.

Toby's tutorials are excellent for learning how or why on Cat machines.

D311 lifter setting height on engine is :-1.736" at TDC for the relevant cylinder.
This will give you an Injection Timing in Degrees of 12Deg. BTDC (Before Top Dead Center)

These lifter settings have a check tolerance of +/- 0.002" so I would usually set the lifter setting minus 0.001" of the spec. :- ie at 1.735" for this measurement specification setting, which has effectively set the injection timing in an advanced condition measurement--this will aid cold starting ability.

Cheers,
Eddie B.

Switched all the nozzles with number 3 cylinder without any change. Spray pattern looked fine on the 4 nozzles but slight dribbling was noted. Going to pumps next.

Slight dribbling is not good and could very well be the cause of what you are seeing smoke wise. Well worth the effort to check lifter setting.
