Potato Head---why did you chose to join the club in lieu of a donation to the BB?? Was it a subscription to the magazine??

BB
People are so accustomed to free forums any fees for simple access will run most off.
The difficulty is the BB is affiliated with a club. The club needs to do what the club needs to do.
Receiving subscriptions or donations from a few is more than what you get presently.
Seems the BB is most active with machines outside your target vintage?
I'm NOT a club person. I will donate to post and receive feedback, or to access the classifieds.
I won't pay to see pictures because I frequent several forums and if I paid for all it would be hundreds of dollars. I enjoy and look forward to it but not that much.
I would think local area chapters would initiate contact with BB guests to offer up encouragement to contribute. Invitation to come see what we are missing. I've yet to be contacted by any.
I do appreciate the people who contribute knowledge and insight, which is the only important thing about this BB.

Brand new member, and new cat owner here. I am not a member yet but I probably will be if I can get my dozer running. This forum is going to be a great resource for helping me getting it going but if I couldn't read the forum or have found it from Google searches I wouldn't be here. IMO if the things your club does do not draw people into wanting to become members maybe you should rethink what you are doing.
You are already requiring people to be registered to view attachments which means you have collected email addresses of potential members in return for them being able to use the forum. The email address of such a targeted group of users who you know own or have great interest in these machines should be worth gold to you and I guarantee you would have a fraction of those registrations if you put up a paywall.
Pass,
Please know that we have only ONE TIME provided the email list to anyone and that one time was to an auctioneer who had dozens of Caterpillars selling which we thought would be of interest to those who frequent here or to the membership in general. The list was purchased as an exclusive for that one time deal. The buyer abided by the agreement and all was good. We are very jealous of that list and protect it absolutely. There is no thought to using it otherwise for the reasons some have offered here.
We are glad you found us and hope you can get many helpful hints or other information to get your Cat running. We have a pretty helpful group here.

Well, I guess this refers to me. I was a member for a couple years many years ago, and have dropped it. I've never made ,o1 cent profit from this site as I do not have any CAT or other brands of equipment. I'm a ex catskinner of 35 years and just love the old equipment and like to read about it. I have copied a few of the old equipment pics., and have looked at a lot of You Tube videos. I do comment to a few posts if I might have a idea of what is wrong or a story pertaining to equipment. I do answer a post if somebody is wanting a year of build for a certain piece of equipment as I have 2 Serial Number books. So, I guess my time is coming to a end. I've enjoyed reading and looking at this site. Good luck in the future. catskinner

catskinner,
I personally have enjoyed your contributions here as I see them. Understand you need not go away as you will be able to continue to post and read here as a "guest." It is only a partial restriction being considered for "guests." Since you say you do not have any machinery that you are restoring or needing repairs, I don't think the changes being proposed will even affect you as a member of the BB. I hope you will stay with us and continue to make your contributions as you have in the past.
If you did happen to re-join us, I would be wanting to pick your brain for a good story for our newsletter! You must have one or two over a 35 year period.

While enjoy looking at the magazine, it was not my motivation. I felt that membership was a way of sustainable support to all the members who provided their time and expertise. I read about the financial issues that the club is experiencing and wanted to give back.

I am only 13 but I started here as a guest but after all of the stupid questions I have asked and people actually answered them I thought I should probably buy a membership because I want the next guy to come and think the same as I did maybe not asking stupid questions but seeing that this place is very helpful and should stay going. this place being free and easy to join and all the knowledge is very helpful attracted me to this place but if we stop giving some those privileges that members get it may not help get people join the membership I think if we can try to encourage people to get a membership it may work better. I was talking to squatch253 on starting a YouTube channel he said that starting a channel a finding out what people watch and don’t watch is trial and error. I think if we try and do different ideas than figure out what privileges we should take away from guest we should try and think of different ideas and try them and see if they work. No clue if anyone read this but if you did I think we should at least contemplate this idea and others

Gosh HG, I wish I had your savvy when I was 13. Great post and well said. Welcome to the Cat Club.
There is no such thing as a stupid question but there may be questionable answers every now and then.
Looking forward to the status of your projects. Guys like you will keep this club going. Thanks for your participation and insight.

Hobo Groh...….
"The only "stupid" question is the one not asked"
Something to remember as we all have asked questions and learned from others. Just ask away...……………
Have a good day.....Bill
