Threads are in the yoke if I remember correctly (if that is the outside piece?)

I have a 20t bottle jack Jeff. What sort of cross-member should I use? As in shape (box, channel, I-beam, my existing 10t beam?) and size/cross-section.

a box beam is a nice symmetrical shape----assuming the bolts are 12 inches apart, a 20 ton load, any shape with a section modules of 6.0 will work. may bend a little but won't break

4 3/4 between the pulling bolts unfortunately. Not sure that a regular 20t jack will fit in there so it might need to be one of those pusher rams.

(note I'm not an engineer) I used an online calculator to figure out a box section that would meet a section modulus of at least six which a 10x3 section with 1/2" walls (S = 6.75) would. The beam that came with the 10t hydraulic puller is obviously a lot smaller and solid section so before I go there I'll see if any of the shops round here have something that might work. I'm also wondering if the 10t hydraulic puller from Harbor Freight is really producing the same output that my 10t bottle jack is, and to try using the bottle jack as-is with the beam to see if that moves it. I couldn't find any pressing tonnage in the serviceman's reference for either of the two clutch hubs - it just says tap the hubs while tightening. Only the sprocket seems to have a pressing tonnage.

Neil at 4/3/4 inch span the bending moment drops way down--probably a section modulus of 3.0 would be fine---you had to do quite a bit of calculations to figure the section modulus of a tube--i just use my AISC steel handbook tables (of which I can't find right now)
also somewhere there was a thread that discussed the 15 ton load would break the hub when installing--I think 10 or 12 ton was recommended

a 6 inch wide plate 1.5 inches thick has a section modulus of 2.25 which is in the ballpark---s=B(D)squared divided by 6, B=width, D=thickness

What was the reason behind the drop in force to install clutch hubs? Was this a catterpillar recommended change? Was it just taking into consideration that all these parts are 60plus years old? Again not disputing your info just curious
