Searching for info on a Rodgers Hydraulic track press

I'll check them out trainzkid88, thanks for the link, I just spoke to the gentleman and have agreed to buy the old track press for $A500 ($US350), it does not have any dies or adapters with it, but I can get them made by my Fitter and Turner neighbor, I'll pick it up on Saturday.

I saw a double acting pump on Fleabay here in Oz, 10,000 PSI with foot operated control plus a couple of 5 foot hoses for around $A1,250 ($US1,000), not sure how big the oil tank is but looks around 7 or 8 litres, as you say, a man could always increase the size of the tank.

I'd be tempted to try my Case tractor hydraulics first, even though they only run a 2,000 PSI, that might be enough pressure to push pins and bushes on old 2 Ton Cat tracks, or I could move closer to PhilC and borrow his fancy pump when he's not using it!.

If you lived closer you would be welcome to borrow it:) I should point out that I did not pay $17,000. I got it off Gumtree for $250. It was sold as being siezed but when I had a closer look it had been dropped and the sheet metal was locking up the flywheel. A little panel beating and it freed up.
You have a good bargain yourself for $500. I priced an enerpac cylinder for a 100ton track press and it was over $2500. You might find the four stage pump will be more than sufficient for what you are doing.

Regards

Phil

I like hearing those stories Phil, what a bargain, well done. I often wonder how many priceless tools and parts have been dumped in the trash bin over the past 20 years as our older generation fall off their perch, and their kids or grandkids come into their homes, sheds and workshops to clean them up for sale, not knowing what to do with all the "old rubbish".

I had a older guy call into my farm a few years ago while I was working on my D4 7J transmission, the tractor had done a million hours and was badly abused, it needed a full rebuild, including new cylinder liners, this guy told me he had only just thrown out 4 brand new liners for that exact engine a few weeks earlier, because they had some light surface rusting, and he thought no one would want them, I nearly brained him with my 10 pound sledge hammer!! LOL

When you say "4 stage pump", is that what that old hand pump is, a 4 speed pump? I have a 1970's vintage Cat hand pump and 60 ton ram I found on gumtree for $250 and that has a 2 speed pump, the ram moves quite a lot when there is no pressure on it, maybe 1/2" per stroke, but once the ram encounters resistance the pumping action on the handle becomes much lighter, but the ram only moves maybe 1/8".
All the best

According to the manual that Eddie linked to the pump is a four stage or speed of pump. The same principle as your two speed pump. I have never seen one with four speeds before. Looking at the pump in the book it looks the same as yours.

My pump seems to have a second smaller oil tank Phil, if you look at the photo I uploaded, and I don't see that second auxillary tank on the pump that Eddie shared with us. I'll be picking it up on Saturday so I'll be better informed, talking to the seller today he said he bought the pump before he got married 56 years ago, he was running a D7 4T by that stage, and the press came with a heap of other Cat stuff with the D7.

I look forward to having a good chat with the old fella, he mentioned raking light scrub for many years out in western NSW, I'm sure he's got a million stories, and with his spinal cord now fused after major surgery, those memories would have been hard earned, in fact he mentioned having recently spent a fair bit of time driving a modern excavator and how he hated it, there was nothing to do in there he said, everything was too easy and he had trouble staying focused, not like the old days he said when those old D7 steering clutch levers took about 35 pounds to pull!!

Hmmmm, 4 stage pump eh, sounds like I need to have a BBQ for a bunch of 20 year old lads and lay on a few cartons of beer, make sure there's some hot looking chicks there too, start laying a few bets on who can pump the fastest and longest, should only take em about 3 hours to turn pins and bushes on a set of tracks don't you reckon, nothing like young lads trying to impress a cute girl, won't need no fancy diesel Enerpac at my place!! LOL

Good find Mike. The hand pump will be fine for a few trial runs. I need to shift a couple of D8 master pins some day if you want to test it out properly.HaHa
cheers WF

Yes you are right Colin, till I learn what I'm doing, it will be best to go slow for awhile, at 10,000 PSI things can go bang in a hurry can't they, I don't think my old 2 Ton tracks will put up much of a fight compared to those big old D8 chains of yours! LOL
All the best
Mike
