Slobbering D311 engine

I have talked about this problem in the past. After using the loader for a couple tough jobs it is still bad. Making a mess. I removed the manifold and as you can see in the video number 1,2,3 cylinders are very wet. Cylinder 4. Completely dry. I am in the process of removing each injector and videoing it while firing over the track. Here is the video of number two injector. What do you think about the spray? What about the drop at the beginning and end? I have the throttle almost to fast idle so maybe the drip would be normal.

Looks like it’s not atomizing very well to me.

What does #4 injector pattern look like?

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

I will be pulling it out in the morning. Was just a bit too hot today to play with it all day.

That's like my 5U - seems to run just fine anyway. I'm hoping to have a 25 acre paddock for it to work on but I suspect it'll go back to dribbling after that. Some Amish girls were looking it over at Canandaigua a couple of years ago when it was on the Baker fan and I felt sheepish because unbeknownst to them, they got oil splats all over their freshly laundered smocks. But other than that, it doesn't bother me too much that it slobbers. Did I hear you correctly that one cylinder has new liners, piston, and rings? What technique did you use to run it in?
You can see some of the slobber in this video at the 25s mark -

Cheers,
Neil

I ran it in with the procedure that you all have listed here on the site. Don't recall exactly but I followed it to a tee. I did remove all the injectors and rehooked them to spray out over the track. The number 4 injector sprays the best with the number one a close second. I found that I had one Body that had partial striped threads that would not hold the injector tight enough to spray. New one will be gotten tomorrow (4F5682). Originally I purchased 4 new injector service kits. I have tested both new and old and find that three of the new would not spray at all regardless of where I put them. I did test all my pumps with the two good injectors and find no difference in the spray pattern. The good injectors spray good regardless of the pump they are associated with. BTW Injector 4/cylinder four in my video was the dry one..... I have reinstalled injector 4 in number one cylinder, number 2 in number 4 cylinder and number 1 in number three cylinder. I hope that CAT has the body and one injector kit in stock in town and I will fit it into cylinder 2. Would really like to know why my new injectors don't spray. They have the exact cat number stamped on them, only noticeable difference would be the mesh screen in the top of them is a finer mesh.

Here is the video of number 4 on the left and 2 on the right. (Good ones). Top middle leaked. Note my note on the body. Bottom one no spray.

I suspect the "land of almost right" has a hand in sourcing capsules. May take several runs to get a good set. They should not dribble at all.

What’s your opinion on the two that are spraying? Do you suggest going CAT direct on the injectors

Hi Team,
it is not unknown for a few new capsule injectors to not open and spray from new--usually clients, via Parts Dept. and before Warranty was granted, bought them in to the Dealer Injection Shop for us to put on a hand pump injector tester and so give the pump handle a decent pump and so start them working correctly.
By the using the same style pumping action clogged or off spray pattern nozzles would come good.

Any used, clogged and non-acceptable spray pattern nozzles were put in our Ultra-sonic bath for cleaning most often with excellent results.
A 0.028" drill can gently be used to clear the orifice of carbon and so may restore the spray pattern if the opening pressure of between 400 and 750 PSI. is correct.

The test for pressure loss from 300 PSI after 30 seconds should be no more than 200 PSI. (300 down to 100 PSI)
Scan below may help for the test procedure (described above) that we used both before and after ultra-sonic cleaning.

If your new after market or Cat nozzles are not working as designed then apply for Warranty and receive new nozzles in exchange.
Scans below show various testers and procedures from long ago--the principles are the same when using a Commercially available injector nozzle pump tester as I described above.
Also explained are the expected test pattern results. Scan of spray patterns are from Google as a visual comparison only.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Just to note..... the coarse thread on the injector body/adapter piece is not designed to tighten up enough not to leak. It will do well enough for testing if everything is clean, but torque the hold down threaded bushing and the coarse threads become just a way for fuel to get into the top of the injector capsule.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the threads except it would be nice if when you remove them, you don’t leave the capsule stuck in the precombustion chamber. Even then I expect you could reach in with a bolt or a tap and screw it into the capsule enough to pull it out.

What is your engine coolant temp running? Running too cool doesn’t help with a slobbering problem.
