Hi All,
I have the engine the right side up now with all the bits on that i am happy with what the gantery can lift. The next job will be giving the head an overhaul, clean ports of rust and lapping in the valves.

I also removed the top of the box to free up the bellcranks and bearings and guess what i found, a steering compartment full ar water. And the gear box full or rubbish so i will remove all the gears, cross shaft and steering clutches, clean them up and the boxesthen reinstall them.

Regards

Daryl

Great work and great pics, very useful for me as I’m about to take the transmission cover off my D4 2T. Thanks for showing the work.

Hi All,
Got a chance to strip down the top cover yesterday and found that the piviot bearings where all seized up, and thats one reason it could not move the levers.

That has always been a very poor application and location for bearings what with no access for lubrication. I'd consider replacing them with oillite bronze or even one of the no lube synthetics.

Good job getting at it and getting things done! I have the cover off my 7U right now and about to go back on. Similarly, some of my pivot bearings were a bit sticky but yours look way worse. Have you seen the lever return stop springs replaced with a chunk of hose? At least one of mine is I discovered the other day. How bad of a faux pas is that? Would it be so frowned upon if I left it this way? Keep up the good work!

Great work! Were the main bearings and rod bearings still available from Cat?

Hi All,
Thank you all, for your support and encouragement on this project. As i get further into it the rebuild i keep findind things that i keep shaking my head at.

As for the progress i have cleaned up the head and laped all the valves and fitted them back inready for fitting back on the motor. As for the transmissin cover i got there and pressures washed it over the weekend ready for a final clean.

OM, i am looking at the oil bronze bushes for this one as the price of the rollers have gone up quit a lot

Mangoman, i have seen lots of temp fixes over my years, so to hear they repaced a spring with rubber hose dose not surprise me, farmer always find a way to getting it going.

Alexjfrech, Some of the bearing are avaliable from Cat, only 1H1546 is not but there are some on Machery Trader

Regards

Hi All,

Just an update on how far i have gotten with the rebuild.

I have the engine all buttoned up and ready to go back in, so now i have shiffted onto the backend, with first removing the rippers and placed them beside the engine but the issue was to remove the ripper mounting frame on the back of the dozer, one of the nuts was rusted away enough that you culd not get a socket on or a grinder in there to cut it off. So $400 dollars later and a brand new gas axe i was able to remove it.

With the frame of i was able to check the S/N on the back and i now have a matching numbers engine and transmission.

Regards

Daryl
