I agree with Rome K/G in that the two gauge system takes out any guess work for a machine in heavy production work, BUT, certainly at our Dealership we found that, as I said above, the pressure gauge was the weak link in poorly maintained cooling systems and tended to block the capillary tube with crud and so incorrect readings were calculated by the operator--based on the colour code sections of the gauges.
We always recommended the single gauge.
As per the scan below for the D9H--1W5170-- I believe as it is now too long ago now to be sure on my part. Also I was under the impression that the two gauge units were superseded--Rome K/G has indicated otherwise and thus I stand corrected.
As I do not have access to a Numerical Parts Record I cannot define the latest Part Number for a gauge to fit your unit.

You have a choice of sticking with the problematic 2 gauge system or going to the single gauge as per the O.S.S. Gauge list.

Eddie, thanks again and I would agree with you that less is more... I understand and would agree that Rome K/G would never have a problem as he maintains and takes care of his equipment.... I bought a dozer with an excellent undercarriage but the maintenance was lacking and to many hands over the years have been on her and there where more quick bush fixes then real permanent fixes... I am of course going through her making sure she is fixed correctly to last another 50 years or so for my son or daughters.... Again thank you....

Thank you George. The main thing to check and make sure is working is the pressure regulating valve on top of the radiator. If the rad. core is good and not leaking then it should keep correct pressure.

Will do Rome K/G is it probably good practice to just go ahead and replace it anyway? Cheap insurance... Again I do not know when it was replaced or it might be original... I am leaning at just buying the water pressure gauge as I have an original one that is reasonable in price vs a new one from Cat that is $114. I don't want to put in an aftermarket.... I cannot find the where to put the water pressure line I was told it is on top of the radiator.. The only place I see is down by the water pump there is a line connection that is closed off now...

Should be a place on the back center or engine side of the top radiator tank for the fitting, parts book should show it.

66A1 to 3951 had heat indicator only (9H1486)
66A3952 to D9H 90V9437 used both heat and pressure indicators.
90V9438-up went back to single heat indicator (7N7084)

Thanks Old Magnet... I went ahead and purchased the water temp gauge 200-5234 This was the updated part number that EDB posted on this link... My previous dial that I purchased less then a year ago was 224-3344 it needed a pressure gauge to compliment the gauge that I purchased.... I am thinking my D9G was a late model and the dial I took off was a single dial and I went by my parts book which called for the 224-3344.... Some waste of time and money but check out my picture of my Oil Cooler and you can see that it wasn't that much of a waste....

I went ahead and listened to Rome K/G and replaced the pressure regulator for insurance purposes.... I got all new gaskets for the oil cooler and of course the appropriate o-rings... Couple new hoses and clamps off the water pump and a cleaned radiator both inside and out as well as the oil cooler itself and I am optimistic we will have a D353 that runs the way she is suppose to... Oh I forgot to mention bought 2 new thermostats/resistors that where not present and replaced that as well.... The only thing I did not touch/rebuilt was water pump.... With any luck it will stay that way.....


Thanks for all your guidance and patience.... Would like to log some seat time on the old girl..... Oh one last thing.. I love my D9G... When I was at the cat dealer they had a D9T for $485,000 and of course used but looking at the ripper I kinda laughed as it was more then half the size smaller then my old girl and for being such a newer machine high track it had a lot more rust then I would like for a used half of million dollar machine.... I wonder if she (D9T) will be even functional in 50 years????? I think not.....

Thank you Kittylover and all those that have encouraged me and provided insight when I was clueless. I have indeed learned a lot about her and have fixed with everyone’s help a lot of the pressing issues...

I am confident I will get that seat time.
