I should have said needle instead of jet

It's all steel...is it supposed to be? Is this an original needle?

Many replacements have a different color tip I assume made out of a different material.

When I turned the jet upside down to drop the needle out a small round hunk o stuff came out with it in pieces. My eyes can't tell if it was a part of the needle or just solidified crud.

If it's crud then that lower passage has to be clogged.

99 percent of the time the lower passage will be plugged so it needs choke to idle. Soaking usually does not get the crud out. Even when properly ran out of gas to shut off there is still a drop or two of gas left in that passage. After 50 years or so they get plugged pretty bad. After carefully drilling out the lead plug a small drill bit using your fingers does the trick. A .177 air rifle pellet seals it back perfectly.

I do have a heated ultrasonic cleaner, what's your favorite solution?

Don't use "purple power", it's pretty hard on bare aluminum I've found. Diluted simple green or Oil Eater Degreaser seems to work well. Whatever you use make sure to thoroughly rinse after to get all the degreaser film off that is left behind.

I tried Purple Power and a parts cleaner from the auto store and wasn't impressed for the price. I've also tried paint thinner, naptha, lacquer thinner, vinegar, something I could get a gallon of for reasonable price.

I get the best results using berrymans carb cleaner although it's not the same stuff as it used to be.

I've ordered a kit so will have gaskets and a new needle and jet.

I unscrewed the 90' elbow and knocked out a chunk like a kernel of corn, the residue is so brittle it has to be scrapped out as the chemical doesn't phase it.

So far I have not found a passage blocked so I am not removing any plugs.

Question is;
I've read this tab gets bent in a couple threads. Was wondering how mine looks. Does it look ok or do I need to adjust some?

That looks pretty good, it just needs to be a 90* angle. That could maybe go a touch further so it's a perfect right angle. Over adjusting is what bends them and they get over adjusted because the carb isn't clean or something else is wrong and adjusting that helps over compensate.

Has anyone had this issue?
The new needle is longer.........making it stick out of the jet quite a bit

Is this what failed tank sealant looks like? I used electrolysis last spring and had it cleaned out. It sat with some fuel in it since and would not feed fuel.

I dug this out of the drain hole with a pick and hemostats. Not a happy hour.

That new needle is correct, the old one would look the same if it's rubber tip was still on it. Make sure to put in the new matching jet too if the kit came with one.

Not sure on the fuel tank, I would have thought electrolysis would have removed all of that.

Those patches are chewy, like caulk.
It was not fun fishing them out of the bottom drain hole. I clamped on with hemostats and pulled and twisted like licorice.
About palm size altogether.
Underneath was all the rust.

I would do the electrolysis process over the course of a week to clean it up again.

There might also be a stripping product to remove any remaining tank sealer.

It sounds like someone tried tank liner but failed to follow the instructions. Get all that liner out, electrolysis or citric acid, look for pinholes, then seal it up

Cheers,

I've got it cooking
It usually takes a week or two
somebody has already brazed the bottom of this so we will see if it leaks after the electrolysis
