Hi Neil,
Can you describe pulling the cage? I am not referring to the end cover 3B6400 but the cage 3B6399. That rascal is on there and the gasket between the clutch housing and the cage needs replaced. Looking at the parts diagram from Form 8480, there is a sleeve I thought the cage may be attached to but the diagram attached does not indicate they connect. Maybe the key is keeping it together. It looks like the cage should just pull over the bearing and the nut located on the same end as the cover and cage.

Thanks-Bernie

Hi Bernie,
the cage is poorly shown as it actually has a step at the inner end of its bore that goes behind the bearing.

The SRB shows a 2 leg puller that could break the flange if the bearing is tight.

I prefer to hold the cage by gloved hand and use a soft faced hammer to tap the shaft thru the bearing.
Your experience may vary.

Cheers,
Eddie B.

What Eddie wrote. I think it was a matter of "finessing" it out of there. You need to undo the nut on the end of the shaft so that the bearing can slip off the shaft as you pull the cage plus bearing, if I recall correctly.

Very useful info that I plan on putting to good use-

I used a two legged harmonic puller using the threaded holes near the center on the cage so I thought I was pretty safe not breaking the cage. It was a no go. Took it easy which is how I saw internal movement. I wasn't sure what the hang up was, but wasn't going to force.

I'll be back into this weekend I hope-ready to get it apart and see what I will need by way of parts and what is available. Hopeful I'll have a list put together then.

Thanks!
Bernie

Brief update-pulled the Cage #3B 6399 by removing the nose nut #61040. A little bit of a job keeping things held down without damaging anything in the vise.

I used a PTO shaft from my brush hog to hold it down. I cleaned and brushed the splines well and slipped meshed them, this might be useful for guys needing alternatives.

I think i saw an earlier post from you Bernie saying the pinion sleeve had no bolts in it and the holes were wallowed out and had no threads. You mentioned you might drill them out for larger bolts? My pinion sleeve is exactly the same with no bolts and oval holes. Just wondered if there’s a fix or whether a new sleeve would be preferable.

Regards,

Tony

Hello Tony,
If that was a while back, I was looking at that but very very new to machines, so wasn't sure what the options were. Old Magnet suggested then to just use a thread locking agent, which I did. I have it apart now waiting on parts and will then decide what to do-threads are there, just not sure how well they'll grip the bolts. I am sure I will use a thread lock as a back up regardless if it do something with machine mods on the sleeve threads.

Ok, thanks Bernie, mine had no bolts so that’ll be a start with plenty of threadlock..

If this works I was able to attach photo from iPhone. Just sharing this fantastic exploded drawing of the Starting Pinion assembly and Clutch from my FORM 8480 Parts Book.

Made good progress today disassembly thanks to this and the “SQUATCH253” YouTube vids. Eddie B-any of your buddies who put these marvelous drawings from pencil to paper, big cheers to them, and of course you.

Have fun!
Bernie
