Fitting an Alternator to D4 7U

I did this for a 9UD6 with a cable blade. It left the gear drive generator open to make an adaptor to drive a hydraulic gear pump for hydraulic controls to angle and tilt the blade. Speeds up the rpm of the one wire alternator to charge at a low idle. Does not affect the tightening of the belt which runs the water pump and fan for cooling.

Nice! Did you make the pulley?

This is what I did on D69U. One wire alternator, works great even at low idle.

Dozer Doug,
Can you post more photos of your setup, also provide more details on the setup, great idea there.
Thanks.

Would also like to see pully details - might consider Delco 12SI( or 24SI) alternator - better cooling newer design same mounting. Bob

My tractor has a 12 volt 50mt starter. The alternator is a standard Delco one wire with 2 groove pulley. I gutted the old 6 volt generator and machined a steel one inch shaft to fit original drive gear. Shaft is 12 inches long. Also machined original end cap on the output end of generator to shorten the old assembly and allow for larger one inch bearing. Used a 5 inch steel pulley with one inch bore from grizzly industrial. Fabricated alternator mount using three of the bolt holes in the lifter covers. Hard to show a pic of Mount without removing alternator. Alternator turns clockwise. Tractor also has a good running pony motor. I use the pony for cold starts. Hope this helps.

Might help a little bit. C clamp in picture is for any vibration, probably overkill. I use just one 4D battery, spins diesel ok. Made a wooden battery box. Not too pretty, but it works. Pics show starter button and volt gauge.

The way Doug built his has been around a long time. I first saw that design in my favorite used parts yard in the 80's. I had one put together in the 90's. The Napa store I got the alternator from had a salesman that was very interested and tested the new Delco alternator and it did not care which direction you turned it.

About 10 years ago I know of a Delco alternator that was converted to 24 volt. As I recall the alternator and conversion was about $150.

I think the only dependency on rotation is the fan orientation may be unidirectional. Some devices also have an optimal rotation for brushes but I don't know if that applies here
