Looking for Suggestions and Perhaps some Photos please of Fitting a 24 Volt Alternator to a 7U D4. The Tractor has been Fitted with a 24 Volt Starter, but never Had any proper Charging Unit , still has the original Gear driven Generator Mounted which We assume is 6 Volt. Have seen Generators cut up and Made as Base for Alternator and And the Alternator mounted on top and driven by a couple of Vee Belts on a D7D 17A. Is there an Adaptor Base with Alternator available either in Aussie land or the US . Any help or suggestions Much appreciated . LJ

Hello LJ. I can take a photo of an alternator with adapter that takes the place of the generator. Pretty clean adaptation in my opinion. Coupled with a Lovejoy style coupler. I found one of an old 17A of mine. More photos tomorrow. JM

I believe this is the current preferred unit...
Try Florin Tractor, I think they have them. Not cheap though.

Hi Lance , Might be worth a phone call to Jim Davis auto electrical Toowoomba ..
He does electric start conversions for old cats , so may be in the know for alternator conversions as well .

Maybe it just me or I don't know the machine, but I think I could have a mount fabbed up and a alt from local parts store made and on in a few hours?
Belt alignment is the only critical thing here and it's not that critical with v belts, close enough is good enough.
One of the first things I did to the d3b we have is to put a GM 1 wire alt on it,fabbed a bracket to fit,no more dead batteries

Depends on what kind of installation you want. Lots of farmer built mountings but only a couple that are clean installations. I'd avoid the ones using Motorola or Leece Neville alternators. They seem to want a ransom for units and parts.

Contact OzDozer. If I remember correctly he and a friend were working on an alternator adapter system to replace generators. Perhaps Mike Meyers might remember more.
