I was happy to find  that the  block was in good condition with  no signs of freeze damage. It was my first time pulling out cylinder liners. Bill

I just went back and reread your story, you have a very historic tractor with a lot of documented history. Looks like you have your work cut out for you. That poor little tractor has done ore than its share of work. Good luck with your restoration and I really enjoy the pictures.

If only they would have used rust inhibitor in the coolant back then.

Interesting project. About 25yrs ago if my memory is correct, 5J 5 or 7 was for sale near me. When looking at it the owner asked me "How do you check the oil?"
I reached down behind the right engine panel to show him, Well, IT DIDN'T have a dipstick or any sign of one.
I see yours has one. Never knew the answer. Perhaps the engineers were experimenting with the future as seen on new vehicles of today with now way to check the tranny fluid. etc LOL

When I was removing the flywheel on 3J1, I noticed retaining pins and a seam. The flywheel has a replacement clutch drive ring. This part was available in 1948, I believe to save the cost of a new flywheel. The cost of machining parts had to be low in 1948. Bill

Hi Team,
I recall that a local engineering firm made and fitted these rings, for D4's mainly, for our Dealership back in the 1960's.
Thanks for the reminder.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

I bought this tool from a retired CAT mechanic years ago. It is made to install safety wire on bolts. It did a nice job. Bill

That would be really cool to see a video of it being used.

Pretty common tool. Flat jaw pliers are used for aircraft use so as not to nick the wires. Serrated jaw version for general use. Lots of youtube video's out there. Look for "safety wire twisters".

Thanks OM, never saw one used before. Amazing how a video clarifies it.
