Otto Gas Engine Works makes piston rings.

www.ringspacers.com/

I bought some rings from them for a Perkins 4.154 almost 10 years ago. Engine is still going strong.

Best of luck.

Ho ronm, I can just imagine the noise that little disaster created!! I agree, 2 piece liners are a very very last resort.

Yeah, too bad I didn't get to hear it happen, just had to fix it after the guy traded it in on a John Deere...
+1 on the Otto Engine Works rings...good guy.

A liner within a liner is quite a comon fix to modern diesel engines where the original bore is integral to the block. It is referred to as a sleeve and is an interference fit with loctite.

Most engine shops should be familiar with this approach. Heck even here in Taswegia they can sleeve modern diesel blocks! I looked at it for my dusted TD5 engine but instead I was able to bore it 20 tho and get os pistons to suit.

Some of the old Ford Dorset diesel engines were/are a dry sleeve design like the Perkins. Interestingly, the largest displacement 6 cylinder model was normally aspirated and was not sleeved while the turbocharged versions apparently were. When installed in combines the combination of higher horsepower settings and dust in radiators, overheating etc resulted in so many failures from seized/pulled down sleeves that at one point there were no spare engines available in North America. Probably the addition of piston cooling spray jets would have prevented the problem. The next engines used were 3208 Caterpillars.

I gathered parts to overhaul a NA 380/6.2 Dorset engine and purchased a set of sleeves expecting to simply remove the old ones and replace with new only to find there were no sleeves in the engine. Had to send the block out to have it bored to accept the new sleeves.

If I had to stack dry sleeves in the cylinder i think I would try to place the joint as low as possible, ie press short section in first and seat against a rabbit at the bottom if at all possible. That way the compression rings and as many of the oil control rings as possible would not cross the joint.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

Thanks for the input everyone, looking at the cylinders I have I assume the piston doesn't get anywhere near the top of the bore leaving a combustion chamber several inches deep, the photo shows a older repair where 2 liners have been used, the short section being just above the top piston ring. I contacted Mellings in the USA yesterday regarding their 14" long liners and they run at $US91 - $US101 each plus freight, so well over twice the price of the slightly shorter 12-1/4" liners I can buy locally for around $US35 a liner.
regards
Mike

I have a set of 4 thirty cylinders available, they have light rust but should clean up, if someone is interested I can measure them.
