HI-WAY YELLOW Water Base Industrial Paint

I found a water base paint that I am going to paint the undercarriage, engine/trans. and tracks of my next restoration. It is semi-gloss acrylic urethane self priming acrylic metal enamel. The brand name is Sierra Performance "Rust-Oleum". I used this brand of paint on a shipping container that I painted with great results. No fumes and easy clean-up.:) I had Dunn-Edwards match CATERPILLARS "HI-WAY YELLOW". The Mixing Base is Rust-208037-1 and the Formula is 94-LS508-09. www.rustoleum.com/tds/METALMAX%20210776%20Jan%2006.pdf

Hi Bill
I really wanted to paint my old grader with water based paint and use my airless sprayer. So I want to know more about your container? What kind of shape was it when you painted it? How did the paint adhere? How is the color lasting? Is it outside/in the elements?
Well anyway thinks for the info.

Just beware of waterbase paints over bare metal. There are some waterborne primers available for automotive use, but hard to get in the US. Putting waterbase paint on bare metal about killed the automakers in the 80's.

Yes, the stuff comes off in sheets. Proper primer is mandatory for good adhesion.

Go to my first link and read the Technical Data about this modern Direct to Metal-Self Priming paint. They have a primer in this product that I will use on parts I think need it or were sand blasted. I painted my container as a test a couple years ago and only scrapped the loose rust and repaired the holes. I used no primer on the container. It is outside and the paint looks as good as the day I painted it. I think it would work well on your grader. It only comes in semi gloss. Here is another link to " Rustoleum Sierra Performance" www.rustoleumibg.com/product.asp?lvl=P&pnv=2&snv=3&pid=154

Paul, I painted the container in a tan color and there is no fading, only time will tell how this custom-tinted yellow will hold up out in the sun. I know my Zieman gooseneck trailer I special ordered in hy-way yellow for a extra $500.00 has faded.:( Here is the prices I paid for the paint I am going to use on my next restoration. Aervoe Old CAT YELLOW spray cans $5.00 each, for small parts. HY-WAY YELLOW from CATERPILLAR $65.00 a gallon, for the sheet metal. Rust-OLEUM SIERRA PERFORMANCE METALMAX semi gloss custom-tint $55.00 a gallon. for engine trans. tracks and undercarriage. I am also thinking about painting a whole tractor with the SIERRA PERFORMANCE METALMAX NAVY GRAY # 238754 if there is a spray can to match.:)

do you think that using different brands of paint will cause a color differance?
I know that some times if the paint is mixed, and the person mixing if changes the least little thing the end result is slightly different. I always try to paint a tractor with the same brand and i get all the gallons required mixed at the same time.

Color can be greatly affected by who mixes it, I had to remix for a tractor I restored, it took me several hours of tinting to get the second batch to match the first. Also the semi-gloss will not hold up as good as a quality acrylic enamel, it lacks UV protection. Just look at the semi-gloss trim used on cars today (the black trim around doors) and compare it to the finish on the car, most of the trim is fading away after a year or two. Plus semi-gloss will stain with oils and dirt and is harder to keep clean. Just my 2 cents worth, I have just been spraying paint for 30 years, and want mine to last.

Painter says quality acrylic enamel is best. It the Cat brand this type of paint? or can you tell me a better brand of paint you have used on industrial equipment.
