i think some might be getting confused between a spring starter and a inertia starter.

even though from a physics stand point both use the same type of energy and effect to do the starting which is inertia.

a spring start use the force stored in a wound spring to drive the unit and turn the ring gear

a inertia stater uses gearing to spin up a fly wheel to do the same
when you hit the lever it releases the force and it winds it over.
thats my understanding anyway

These starters are mostly used on machinery that work now and then . Electric starters give too much trouble because of the battery . I have had to do with these spring starters since the late fifties so I can say to have some experience . An excellent example is the towed vibratory roller .
Starting a cold diesel engine is one thing but starting an old and tired Cat engine is another thing . For starting a diesel engine in general you need heat , lots if them .
Our old Cats use the precombustion system , which is not an easy cold starter .
Back to my roller , Only in good conditions that engine would start at first time , but on colder mornings I had to repeate the procedure several times . I hope that you see these starters are not the way to mount on our tractors . Our engines need to be turned over severa[ times against compression to develop heat .
