For future information search the thread "Can a big old delco-remey 12V generator be traced to machine issue?" The very prometon in the picture, tag is what was on the Delco used by Cat on most things in the 40's to 60's. If the tag is red , even with it not being stamped like this one it should be 12 volts. A black tag indicates it started life as the 6 volt version. I have been told the 6v can be converted to make 12 volts. But that is beyond my electric knowledge.

BLACK tag 6 volts
RED tag 12 volts

But with 50, 60, or even 70 years on all parts, there are many frugal people that are very clever. So you never no about what has been done.

Very nice looking tractor and blade. We need a place on here list all the different blades , hydraulic pumps and controls. As I don't think I have heard of the Arrow brand before. But do think I have seen another blade that could well be a Arrow product.

went out to check color on tag. Tag is gone, But then I saw the 5B number on pulley

I use 12v battery on my D2 and D4 which have 6v starters on the pony engines--no problems so far

Hard to find a decent 12v battery any more. A good 6v battery rare as hens teeth. I say stick a 12v in it and just charge it or jump it when necessary. Trying to keep a generator working is asking for frustration and grief. Better yet a a solar charger.

John, to start my 22 I was using a 12v battery on my original starter for several years and broke the bendix drive spring. I was able to find a replacement on line (I ought two) but, due to the front mounted hydraulic pump, I had no way to start it until I found a replacement bendix drive. I got scared and went back to six volt.

Nice tractor!!

Well no tag is a bit of a problem. But I don't think the number on the pully is very helpful ether. It seems the number cast into parts is not the part number in most cases. Generally the pully is a separate part number from the generator. So unless it is only used on one generator your no closer to a definitive answer with a part number for pully. Life would be easier if the cast number was the part number.

In the case of this tractor since you have lights test them with 6 volts. If they light up I would assume it was all a 6v system originally. I would guess everyone knows if you test 6v lights with 12v they burn up instantly. With a very bright flash. Forty years ago neighbor had a box of tractor lights and started testing with a 12 v battery. Most had been good 6v lights.

there is no need to use a 12 volt battery. the optima 6 volt will spin the engine just as good as a 12 volt and the generator will keep it charged up to boot. and as a plus plus there is room for two in the same space as the the lead acid battery.

I have the same experience as bursitis - the Optima 6v is probably the best battery I've had. I believe Old Magnet mentioned that brand way back and that got me looking. I left mine out in the cold all winter - hooked it up, spun the pony no problem, charges up nicely using the original generator on my 5U. And they're easy to find - sold at the usual auto parts stores

Cheers,

Ok, Ok, I seem to sense a theme building here! Seems this OPTIMA battery of which you speak is the CATS meow. I tend to agree. not much different price than a reg 6v at Orschelens. When I start working on it again that is probably the route on which I will travel. RIght now I MUST take care of some off topic projects or lose my inside sleeping privilages! Poor lonely little bugger is tucked inside a drab old tarp!

ebay is my source for these batterys.  Over the last 10-12 years I've gotten two of them for our '06 Prius and found them cheaper than local sources.  I determined the model needed and found some on ebay.  Amazon would be another probable source,
