the relief fitting should have a little dick valve inside it just to keep the dirt and water out it might look like a small panelling nail and some are spring loaded some are not. if that valve is missing good idea to change it. any industrial/automotive supplier should have them in stock these are a standard npt thread grease relief nipple get the lowest pressure.
