D2 injector problem

Upper and lower gaskets on the fuel filter are not the same. I assume you have them in the correct order. Also, a stuck relief valve or collapsed spring in the transfer pump can cause it to pump very little pressure, thus "a little fuel finally getting through:". I'm sure you know of these things. I just believe in checking all of the easy things first because it is easier! Good luck. I hope the answer is easy and inexpensive. The 5U has a beautiful little engine. I expect trouble is not frequent.

I found my problem. It is a stuck rack and two injector lifters. Any ideas on how to free them up without tarring too much apart?

I have found my problem. My fuel rack and two injector lifters are stuck. Any ideas on how to get them free without removing very many parts.

take the inspection cover off the pump and spray every thing with a little penertrating oil and work it by hand to free it up. you will need to loosen the bleed screws or fuel lines at the pump to allow the stuck lifters to move freely.

the best method is remove the injection pump and have it serviced

Take the side cover off the pump and use penetrating oil, gentle tapping, maybe lacquer thinner, etc. 50/50 acetone and ATF is a dandy penetrant but won't hold in the can without adding acetone. Take the pumps with plungers out through the top. Pay attention to the rack timing so you will know how to put it back together. soak the pumps in acetone, gently work the plungers free. Clean everything, and I mean CLEAN clean. Don't mix up parts. Plunger must go back into the hole it came out of, clean the pump bores thoroughly, and the fuel ports. Tape off the openings to keep the assemblies clean while you assemble the pumps. It will take some wiggling and working to get pumps out with a plunger stuck in them. You gotta just wobble stuff around until it gives a little. The plungers are buttoned onto the tappets so you need to work the pump off before you can slide the plunger free of the tappets. And be sure you don't have a tappets stuck up. It can happen and may be mistaken for a stuck pump. It's all pretty obvious when you get in there. Have fun!

Cat didn't put "BUY CLEAN FUEL--KEEP IT CLEAN" on the fuel cap for nothing. Now you gotta pick up the pieces for somebody who didn't!

I have freed up the lifters and the rack is moving fine. I've got some free play between the rack and the govenor so I need to check my service manual about adjustments.

I've got everything back together and am trying for a start up. It pops once then kicks out the bendik but I am getting smoke out of the stack. I believe that it is just a Matter of time it will be running. Thanks
