if you used later chains you would have to use later grousers too.

something to check is are the dimensions for the track links the same as the originals apart from the bushings as you dont want to create problems with the track rollers and the idler.

personally i would try and find those berco track links as they are the same size as original and it means less work/hassle later if you have to change any thing else in the track system as it just fits from the box.

by the way what is wrong with the original track chains. track links can be rebuilt, pins and bushes can be changed or turned. there is al-sorts of reclamation info for track gear in the members library. that applies specifically to this era of cat equipment

What will happen if you use the Grousers that were originally designed for the 2 1/8 inch chain? They are designed to fit the chain.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions that they are different. I found the set of D4C rails near by.  I do have a few links on my 7U where the pin siezed in the bushings and tore out the holes in the links out.  I don't have the machine running yet so I don't know how many more pin issues I have.  I know the tracks were stiff when we loaded it on the trailer but it sat for over a decade before I bought it.

If they were the same as the ones for my 7U I was going to get them to have spare parts on hand.

when you say d4c? what era of machine are you talking about? there was a D4c that sat between the d4U and The d4d.

i would simply find servicable links to replace the damaged ones. never know what a member may have laying around so place a wanted add on the forum and in the magazine there is also the old machinery magazine as well.

i would remove the grousers after putting the machine on blocks and pressure wash as much crud out as i can and then give it all a liberal dose of diesel and oil mix to free up the links and go from there. a few judicious whacks on each pivot with a brass lump hammer wont hurt either.

If I understand the "tore out the hole in the link "  that seems like the worst case.  As in the picture links look like rail height is good yet.  My experience has been old warn  links will not rust up as bad as newer links, or it takes more time for the rust to grow to where the link is solid and will not start to move.

If you can find a shop that still turns pins and bushings,  I think consulting them is in order. As I understand wear on bushing is a lot but none warn all the way through. So hopefully a pin and bushing turn is still possible. 
 

rather than guess why don't you just get the part number off of your links? and compare the measurements with the wear limits to see just exactly what you have?
