Matt,
Did you ever discover the serial number on the transmission case? I recall when you removed the winch you said the tag was missing., If you find the two holes where the tag was attached, if you scrape the paint the number should be stamped there.
Curiously your low number 7U has curved steering clutch levers, my 7U 18xxx has curved, my 7U 22xxx has straight levers.

The tag was missing but there were still 2 rivets there, there were no numbers stamped anywhere though.

I'm pretty sure my machine was that 1950s serial number. Besides those levers, everything else matched up. Single-piece transmission cover, floor plates were older style, the latest date on the patent tag was 1950. I actually talked to the guy at Phillips Tractor about it and he mentioned that swapping in the curved levers was a pretty common mod, since the straight lever ergonomics were so bad.

Hi PNW.Hillbilly,
Firstly, the rod should be straight, yes I have had them bent on some of my rebuilds I have straitened them and all ok.

Secondly, I just posted an image of the tool the you need to remove the nuts on the lower gearbox shaft in Vintage Tools.

11 or 12 years back, I built a 6U up from bits and pieces of various machines. Had an old style rear casing and decided I wanted the straight gear selector. Changed that then had to swap to the curved steering clutch levers. I forget why, but then also had to swap brake pedals and modify cut outs in the floor plates.

I ended up making my own (very ugly) socket.  That nut is really on there... my breaker bar was bending and not budging it.  Ended up having to use an impact to break it free...thankfully my homemade socket didn't shatter.  Putting it back on and aligning it is going to not be fun.
