William...there are charts that give torque values and some of the factors involved....
-thread size, diameter, coarse or fine thread, fastener material, what kind of lube or dry threads, etc....

-after awhile of turning enough bolts and nuts, you get a feel for what is enough esp for the smaller stuff.  if it's really critical, then follow up with a torque wrench to verify..and with the larger bolts the torque really climbs....double check..

Hi Eddie, when searching for a title or subject or something that contains multiple words with spaces between them, enclose the entire string you're searching for in double quotation marks like this:

"Some Small Horizontal Starting Engine Quirks"

When I did that, your thread came up as the second hit (the reason it was second was because that string was found in this thread, which is more recent) so I can vouch that the thread is there.
What happens is if you put in a list of words, which to you are a subject or sentence, the search engine just sees them as a list of search terms, rather than a coherent sentence. So, to ensure it's looking for that string of words, enclose in double quotation marks. Give it a shot and let me know how you get on (and here's the link to your thread) www.acmoc.org/bb/discussion-d72/16272-so...engine-quirks#126282

Hi Will D2,
there were no specs for General fastener torques as such back in the day--important fasteners had their specific torques given in the Servicemen's Reference Books.
Later on Cat came out with a general fastener torque chart as scanned below--some early fasteners were not grade 8 so we should be careful--when Cat realised that Grade 8 fasteners were being replaced in critical applications by their low grade equivalent fasteners/bolts, such as those used to attach floor plates etc. they switched to ALL Grade 8 minimum specification fasteners.
Cheers,
Eddie B.
