Shaft size should be considered. If shaft is ridged enough and one of the pillow block supports is close to the coupling I'd think you'd be ok.

We are thinking of using 7/8 “ round bar as that is the size of the chain coupler. Can probably put an extra pillow block in as close as 4 or 6 inches to the coupler. Going to run a sprocket on the end of the shaft running a chain to a smaller sprocket on the pump shaft to increase the driven speed. Hope it all works out. Really appreciate your help.

If you can get the alighnment very close to PERFECT AND KEEP IT THERE OK or consider universal joints like used for the front ccu drive.

Trying to send you some pictures.

This frame work to support the OMC shaker boom is real similar one that OMC came and built on site about 1970 to mount on a AC HD 9 dozer that had a angle blade. The Cat 9u D6 and AC HD 9 have been more robust in many ways than a IH TD 14 (pictured). But the TD 14 is the only one that balances somewhat without adding a counter balance on the the rear. Two 55 gal drums filled with water was the standard on a D6.

I talked to the owner of pictured shaker and commented on your set up, his first comment was do you have a dry or wet clutch. This is very important as you are going to be putting much pressure on all the engine support and alignment is critical for the rubber drive lings in the dry clutch ( thermoids). And of course the wet clutch was made handle the feathering (slipping) you need to make a hookup without barking limbs. We also tried remembering where all the old shakers are, and one less than I was thinking so probably nobody is ready to let one go yet.

I believe I have some D6 pics on the old ACMOC site with a shaker but this board is still a work in progress. And I was looking for older pictures for other things and have not found them yet but to be able to show you other. Also my tec help is all busy for a week or so.

Having seen more than one operator get in trouble, much easier on equipment to always work from the low side of tree. The pruning of the tree in some cases makes this hard, but any thing to keep boom on the high side. I never got stuck on a tree but came close a time or 2 thinking I can back out of that.

Wow, that ground looks like it's completely parched, or is it worked up to eliminate vegetation?

Cheers,

Trying to send you some pictures.

Sorry about the doubles last time we are learning, I think. This set bits and pieces. The middle picture is all real Cat that is the plates and double u joint that bolts to the crank pully. I believe that would drive all the old front pumps Cat sold. The last is similar I garbed in some junk pile somewhere, I believe the bolts wholes fit a AC HD 6 but not sure.

The first is a cheap vane pump on a 9u that I use to farm with, much handier than a rear pump. And makes pressure to run modern tillage tools. It is driven by one Cat plate the same size u joint driving a square shaft into a 1000 series Spicer I believe it was. I have another D6 that the original Cat u joint was destroyed, had a machinist center a smaller u joint and weld it on. With smaller u joint all the way the pump only needed 1.5 inches of offset which is much neater than the one pictured.

Well Ray, us flat landers would refuse to machine harvest your orchard, as it isn’t smooth enough!
Seriously, we have had farmers (level ground mind you), but the orchard floor was so uneven, we refused to harvest.
I’ve seen videos of someone near you that uses a D6C to shake walnuts.
What variety does well around your area?
Thanks for sharing photos.

That was Oct 2019 about 30 miles north of Santa Margarita, but very near the same rainfall band as SM. I don't remember what day but last rain of the season was April or maybe the first part of May. So 6 months without a drop of rain. Those are not the best English Walnuts trees, there many better. Just where the shaker was working when I was out getting pictures. They do best cultivated in the spring making what soil scientist types have called dust mulch. Or old fashion summer fallow. This has been mowed and drag in hope of using mechanical nut harvesting equipment. So it is also considered level or at least very gentile slope compared to many walnut orchards.

But just trying to help OP get a working walnut shaker on his 9u D6 he was asking about to start the whole post.
