Thanks Leon, I got some graphite impregnated packing on the way through amazon.ca. Will likely just add more or possibly replace all the packing since I'm at it with new cut to the diamiter and overlapped staggered joints

Yes, replace all the old packing. It's probably rock hard and will be tough on the shaft. Cut in individual rings with bias cut butt ends as you state, be good for another 70+ years.

Cat made a special wrench for that packing gland. I was able to use a vice grips chain wrench on my D8. A little heat and it broke free. Backed it off and cleaned threads, re packed it and does not leak a drop.

If you’re digging the old packing out, avoid scratching the shaft. You can poke a tool in next to the housing and dig it out that way without hurting anything but better to avoid the shaft surface.

the scan below from the 3T OMI grey book, Form No:-10481-06, Dated 02/56, tells how to adjust the water pump packing.
The packing nut wrench is purposely short so as to help prevent over-tightening of the packing and so prevent burning of the shaft and packing due to running DRY.

Follow the instructions as the packings are meant to leak a drip or two to allow water to flow thru to lube said packings.
