Giving my old D4 7U some well deserved love

Those clutches look almost like new compared to mine in the D4 7J, you have thousands of hours left in them, brake linings look good too, you mentioned some cracks in them, it's not a big job to roll those bands out while the top is off if you wanted to check them.

Sounds like there are some parts available over the border, getting what you need rather than a whole dead D4 carcase will please Mrs Mangoman and the neighbors I suspect, otherwise you might end up with a yard full of heavy Cat crap like tranny housings, rusted tinwork, fuel tanks and flogged out track chains you will never use, much better to save that space for the second Cat project tractor........
Mike

Thank you Mike. Good to know I shouldn't worry too much about the clutches and brakes. Not sure what I want to tackle this weekend if I have time. Maybe I will do some thread repair for the cover, flush out the compartments, make some gaskets and get towards putting the cover back on. We will see.. It's our little girl's big 3 birthday tomorrow so the production might suffer a little :)

Replied by Mangoman on topic Trans cover reseal
Hello again,

Just wondering what is the way to reseal this? I see a tired old cork gasket for the transmission box itself. Looks like I will have to get that from the Cat dealer judging the size of it. And around the clutch and brake compartments? Does one gove that a little silicone? Also, I tried inquiring about the gasket from the local Cat dealer and they weren't too sure which one I needed. Does anyone know if 3B889 look right to anyone more knowledgeable? Thanks!

The 3B0889 is $103.83 from Cat. I would eave the old cork in there and just clean it up good, put permatex sealant on the trans case where the gasket sits, the rest of the cover and case just clean good and put anti-seize on the surfaces. Check those spring eyes on the bellcranks, I have seen those almost wore through, those pins on the bellcranks can be remade or welded up and reshaped too.

Ok thanks Rome. The cork is pretty well disintegrated. Broken in a few places for sure. Maybe I will look closer and see if I can salvage it.

Gotcha on the never seeze. I had wondered as it would one heck of a time to pry that whole cover off with silicone and the other compartments arent needing such critical sealing.

Thank you for the advice.

Your welcome, I think the cork is just 1/2"x 1/2" maybe a hardware or Olsens Gaskets could get you the material cheaper.

Rome is right, that gasket is basically just a straight bit of cork that you fit in the groove, I bought a large sheet of rubberized cork and made my own on one tractor, on others I re-used the old gasket with a liberal coating of Permatex, looks like that tranny top has been off before with all the blue gloop hanging on.

Is that a chunk broken out of the housing in the back corner, I've never seen that on the early D4 tops.

The early D4 have a pair of needle roller bearings sitting vertically in the housing for the steering clutch levers, it pays to pull them and clean them up, they are usually rusted solid and packed with dirt, give them a good coating in grease, looking at the 7U parts book you might have the same bearings, part number is 3H8363 and 1B3756.

Make sure your lube lines to the steering clutch thrust bearings are free of mud wasp nests and other blockages too, those little flying mongrels fill every open hole in a old Cat with mud nests in a heartbeat, check your thrust bearings can get oil into them OK, unless you have the upgraded grease lines, then check them for good flow.

Lol, thats what i thought too but the picture is tilted left or counter clockwise, that is a wood table, maybe and the case is sitting on end, so if you tilt your head to the left it will look allot different, lol

So you can buy a sheet of cork 1/2" think and just cut it out? I've never seen cork gasket material that thick but I will inquire if that is what I should ask for.

The vertical needle bearings- are they at the "rear" of the case where the springs attach?

Also, each side feels different at the levers. One side has freeplay and the other does not. When I watch them over center the springs, one side looks to have play while the other has not so much.

And attach fittings, pump grease and check to see it is making a mess down by the thrust bearings?

Mucho gracias
