Lucast at Just Old Trucks sells KBS Coatings Maxx in both Caterpillar Highway yellow and grey matched to the color samples from ACMOC.

kbs.justoldtrucks.com/kbs-maxx-1/

I used it to paint my 7U a year ago. The color is an exact match to what I was looking for. It is a 2k polyurethane catalyzed paint. The gloss is much higher than the original. I needed a good epoxy primer to get good coverage.

About $160 per gallon. Usually no added charge for shipping.

Caterpillar has had a long tradition for being Yellow but........ that was not always the case.

As you know Caterpillar was formed on April 15th 1925 by the merger of Best Mfg and Holt Mfg. Best was primarily black in color with red accents and Holt was Gray with red accents. So when Caterpillar started they went to gray with red accents but in December 7th of 1931 they went to Caterpillar "Highway" Yellow.

Paint Codes:

Gray Federal Standard # 595B-26134

Red Federal Standard # 595B-11120

1/7/31 to 6/1/79 Old Caterpillar Yellow: Cat # 4C-4185, PPG# 80453 Dupont # 421A

7/1/79 to current year New Caterpillar Yellow: Cat # 4C-4184,

For more information please take a look at the ACMOC Archives page www.acmoc.org/archives

For those of you interested, I bought three different Rustoleum Caterpillar Yellow rattle cans and painted some parts. Each can had a different label and stock number (or whatever it is) and the words Caterpillar Yellow on the can next to the bar code. One can had a stick-on label that says "Matches Old Caterpillar Yellow" on the lid. I painted areas of the engine with all three of the cans shown and could not see any difference in the color. It seems that the stock number refers to the different can labels, not the paint formula. None of them match the the ACMOC paint chip. I could not find any Krylon that day to try.

See for yourself:

I can't remember for sure, but I believe that I painted the wrench with a spray can from Caterpillar a few years ago.

Hi, Folks.
I asked today about Old Cat Yellow at the local Miner's Hardware store and was given this ref. # - 7448402, and this one: Rustoleum 7400

I have just been to Rustoleum's web site and its search facility is almost as much use as a breast pocket inna G-string or an udder onna hen. (Chickens can't suck.)

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

I just wanted to add some pictures to this thread, in case anyone else in the future is trying to find a source of Old Cat Yellow paint.

This is a test panel I painted with several coats, using the Ag Specialties "Caterpillar Highway Yellow", CML 30114. I also ordered several spray cans.

It seems a bit on the darker yellow side, but overall I like the color. I know many of you are good painters, and use the PPG or other professional quality paints. I just wanted something I can use easily to paint for farm use, and like others had difficulties finding a source. Ag Specialties were easy to order from, and the paint arrived a few days later.

Anyway, just wanted to add to the list of available paints.
