What are the symptoms of a failing condenser?

Normally I would add in to check and or lubricate the pivot shaft on the points. One time mine was dry and causing the points to stick occasionally. Mine starts right up and runs fine unloaded but I noticed last year that it was missing under load. No amount of choke helped it so I am thinking I need to get the hood off to play around in the Magneto.

Hi Mike,
the link should give you part of your answer.
Somewhere I have a diagram and explanation of depending upon which point pad has build up on it as to whether you need to lengthen or shorten the pig tail lead from the capacitor/condenser to fine tune your system.

Magneto's are a source of frustration to many.
Having a reliable coil re-winder/maker is becoming a thing of the past.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Interesting info there Eddie, thanks for the link, though way above my pay grade and modest intellect, not to mention ignorance about electricity, but worth reading for sure.

What amazes me is the very idea that a set of points can successfully open and shut thousands of times a minute, and do that for thousands of hours, brilliant really isn't it, that little spring is working it's ring out isn't it......

A bad condenser can result in burned points. And if you just cleaned/replaced and gaped the points immediate failure can indeed be the result of a bad condenser. That's why for DECADES it was standard that you replaced the condenser whenever you replaced points.

Problem today is getting good quality electrical parts for a points and condenser system. In the past Blue Streak, Standard and Napa's Echlin lines were the go too source for the best of the best. All 3 were from the same source! Last set I bought from one of those brands was defective right out of the box! So the quality issue is hurting everyone.Seeing the same thing with Voltage Regulators. Even from formally quality sources folks are getting them bad, new out of the box. This has seen a drastic increases in 12 volt conversions with an electronic ignition upgrade on a lot of collector tractors. It's even to the point that you can buy a battery charger that only charges 12 volt. And not, not just cheap garbage charges. My roll around 200 AMP booster charges with auto detect that is 4 years old is 12 volt only.

Because of these issues I'm really thinking about a direct electric start conversion on my 7U D4.
