does the clutch brake on the 20 work similar to the D2 D4 ??? if it does then there is a fiber disk that acts as a brake to stop the transmission gears from spinning. you need to push firmly on the clutch to activate

It appears that your question was answered the last time. You were even showed the pages from the service manual.

I admit to being aggravated before because I'm impatient when I have a machine opened up & want to resolve the problem before my attention gets diverted. Helps to remember that the number of people with in depth knowledge on anything old is fading. One thing this club is good for is to make personal contacts with people, use the member list and call people who own a twenty, that might narrow the field. Look at the machine list compiled by Chrisco, contact some of those members.

I think STEPHEN pretty much hit the nail on the head, not as many folks left around anymore that have the type of in-depth knowledge on these older machines. I was just thinking the other day how over the last year or two I've seen the models of Cat machines talked about on the bb here slowly moving away from the '20's through '50's era and increasingly 1960's and newer - not that there's been a universal shift but it mirrors what is also happening with many of the other brands of antique tractors (and collector cars) as well, the older models that were popular a couple of decades ago aren't so much the sole focus with the enthusiasts of today. Just as old Model T's were once the rage to restore, they gave way to the 1950's era cars, then those models were eventually replaced by the '60's and '70's muscle cars as the top dollar earners on the auction blocks - the same is also happening with old tractors.

Growlyone, do you happen to have all of the manuals for your Twenty (mainly Operator's and Parts)? Those tractors are quite a ways out of my wheelhouse so I don't know if there are other adjustments that have to be performed on the clutch lever (as far as travel goes) at the same time that the clutch itself is adjusted. I do have the L/PL Twenty parts manual here and after a quick look it does appear that the clutch brake is in a fixed, non adjustable position like you mentioned. Therefore it appears that the throwout collar has to have the ability to travel far enough to come up against it. So, are you running out of travel on the clutch lever before the collar comes up against the brake (hitting the fuel tank or something else) or are the clutch dog links being stretched tight before the collar touches the brake? How about the wear between the collar and actuating fork - lots of play between the two that may be causing you to lose travel? Like with most mechanical things, some times it can be a combination of several faults instead of just one single issue.

As far as clutch brake friction thickness goes, I don't have a measurement that I can give you. But for what it is worth I have heard that the Cat parts manuals are supposedly all drawn to scale, so by measuring the relation of component thicknesses in the diagrams may at least get you in the neighborhood of what the original once was. Here is a scan from my L/PL Twenty book, it appears that the clutch brake thickness is relatively close to the thickness of the flange that it's riveted to, perhaps that may give you a better idea of how worn your friction pad is.

I have a 22 operators manual that discusses adjustment of the flywheel clutch brake. I can email you a copy if you PM to me your email address. I don't know how similar the 22 and 20 would be in this situation. Never worked on a 20.

Good Luck

Hi, growlyone.
As kracked1 mentioned in his post, it appears that you were given some answers in your previous thread, along with scans of the appropriate pages from the operators manual.

www.acmoc.org/bb/showthread.php?33719-caterpillar-twenty-clutch

You have not said whether or not you followed up on that and/or, if you did, what the results were. Provided there are people here who have the answers you are looking for, you will usually get them, and often very quickly.

That said, distance - and the COVID19 virus - being what they are, there is only so much any of us here on this BB can do. There are STILL some things that YOU hafta do for yourself - - - like follow through with the answers that you were given to see if they help - and then get back with more questions if they don't - or maybe a shout out to those who helped you if they do.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

I guess he said he was "outta here" so he's not going to see the replies, but the next guy that knows how to search and reply hopefully will. I have to say you guys have a lot of patience and are very kind with your responses and that's commendable. Hopefully he'll get the same measured response from wherever else he goes. But the internet is generally not kind to people that flare up.

Cheers,
Neil

I’d guess he’ll visit and see the goodwill put out to him. All good suggestions, especially squatchs input on manuals. Not just about comparing scale items, but just having them. I can’t imagine doing much without what I have. Not to mention the simple quality and skills went in to drafting and developing an informative and concise resource. I like having books for similar models and out of range S/N too.

Have fun!
Bernie
