This is the oil drain for the pony motor on my D6 5R, right?



I am going to have to unbolt my pony and do the pony tilt to replace my starting pinion assembly, so I am trying to figure out if I need to drain the oil.

My book tells me to drain the radiator fluid and the oil for the procedure, but it doesn't point where the oil drain is and I have never really known where the oil drain is for the pony.

Here I thought I was going to have to flip the entire tractor over in order to drain out the oil!

The thing I circled in my photo, that is the pony motor oil drain. Though, I guess you could use it as an oil fill if you flipped the tractor over.

The floor of the D6 pony motor is the top of the main flywheel housing, that's why the drain is attached to the flywheel housing and not the pony motor.

Walt, the part ( behind the main oil filler) is circled. 7/8 wrench drain plug on the bottom.

And yes, having removed the pony motor from our 4R D6, you definitely do want to drain the oil out before you unbolt the motor. Don't ask me why I know that so well.

For his information. How many nuts are there to remove? I always miss one that is hidden. Instead of lifting the pony with a hoist, I find lifting it with a pry bar a little at a time on each side ( sliding in wood spacers as I go) till it clears the studs is the way to go. Hard to find center of gravity and it hangs up on the studs. Then lift it off. If you are reusing the gasket this is the best way if just pulling the pinion. Only needs raised about 3/4 inch.

My plan is to hopefully tilt the pony like the book shows to remove and re-install the pinion. So the plan is to leave the current gasket. I bought a replacement gasket just in case, though. I'm not really sure yet how I would hoist the pony out if I did want to remove it completely.

By view of the gasket, it looks like there are 14 bolt holes.
