D4 7u blown head gasket between cylinders

More

Well I found my main problem was that the head gasket was blown between #1 and #2. Not sure why on that but who knows? Anyway, mine was pinging and smoking like a burnt valve but I dont actually see anything wrong with the valves except for #3 being pitted pretty badly. Would the blown head gasket between cylinders like that cause it to smoke and ping? Pictures of what I found attached. #2 is second from the right and thanks for any help.

Interested in seeing closer pics of each cylinder of the head. Blown head gasket will do weird things.

See attached. I took these as soon as I had pulled it off. 4 & 3 in first pic. 1 & 2 in second pic where the blowout was at.

After checking the head for flatness, (usually just having a machine shop take a pass across it on general principles), the next step in my book would be checking liner protrusion looking for a low liner or large difference between adjacent liners. I have never heard much about the smaller engines having problems with the counterbores in the block deck, but I guess there’s always a possibility, or maybe an upper seal/shim went bad and let one drop.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

It was time! That head has been on there a long time! Those rubber grommets look pretty bad. I would have the head checked, maybe new guides and valves, check/reseal prechambers.

My 2 cents, look very close between the valves on #3 for a crack. It looks funny and it has been taking water for awhile. You can see from the pitting. I bet if you look closely at the sleeve there might be rings of tiny rust pits where the water sat when the engine was shut of for extended periods. I agree with the fact of having the head checked and valves done paying attention to the valve protrusion spec. Dont skimp on it as it will make it easier to start. Also have the precom chambers resealed.

Don't want to the bearer of bad news but maybe this engine is due for a complete overhaul? Any idea of the hours on it?
