Two questions? 22 mag gap and D2 upper roller?

More

I cant find my book that shows the point gap for my 22 with a Wico mag. It has gotten harder to start lately and I suspect the points
2nd question is about D2s that have an upper track roller. I was comparing the 3J that I drug home last week and another 3J that I have and noticed an upper roller on the newer one. I got out my LaVoie book of D2 photo archives and saw some 3Js with the upper and many without. I assumed that at some point they added them to production. I then looked at the U series D2 photos and some of them had the upper roller and some did not.
Was an upper roller an option or an after market part or was there a reason for some having them and some not? Scratching my head wondering. Thanks for any information. Grant.

The upper roller was an option.

Not Quite sure on a Wico, But the Original Eiseman CM 4 gap is 20 thou, I would suggest the Wico could be similar, Clean points carefully , and Make sure no Particles of Filings are left around .
Top rollers on D2's seem more prevalent on Wide Gauge for some reason , and I think there are couple of Versions of them

Replied by edb on topic Wico Magneto Model Numbers
Hi Grant,
if you could supply a picture of your magneto and any Model Numbers on it we should be able to narrow it down for you.

Eisemann are a bit of an odd one out with generally a 0.020 gap as Lance said--there can be exceptions.

A lot of other brand mags run 0.014--0.018" points gap.

Most Wico pony mags I have come across are at 0.015" points gap.

I would try that--going to 0.020" points gap advances the timing some--points open earlier and can cause weaker spark due to a less than designed dwell angle to allow the magnetic flux to build to its designed maximum for best spark.
Also changes the "e" gap at which time the flux is at its designed maximum peak at which time the points should open for max. spark.

Oldcroak Magneto service has a good deal of data on Wico and many other brand magneto's.

Down the left hand column of the linked page is a good range of data for many models of Wico magneto's.
the Alpha/numbers listed in that column should give you an idea of what you need to find on a data plate or stamped into the casing.

Hope this helps.

Eddie, thank you. I didnt have much luck yesterday and pulled a muscle in my arm trying to start the darn thing. It will be 3 or 4 days before I get back to the ranch and get the model number. I think I will buy a new set of points, cap and rotor and not have to wonder about any of that. I had never heard of Oldcroak Magneto. I think there is another company called "Only Magnetos" or something like that. I will try to locate them both. Thanks again, Grant.

You might be thinking of Mainely Magnetos, from Maine. I don't think they have this great literature reference though that OldCroak has. That information is gold

Replied by edb on topic Pony Arm and Rope Lengths
Hi Grant,
Ouch, sorry to hear about your arm, sorry could not resist posting this.

Pony rope length for D2-D4 is given as 7 foot, and for D6 is given as 10 foot.

Lengths not given for 933 (D2), 955 (D4), or 977 (D6) but I think these lengths would work.

Polypropylene sash cord, 1/4" diameter, minimum strength 250 lbs. Use a Figure Of eight knot at end of cord to fit flywheel slot.

I believe these lengths allow you to stand on the ground and pull the rope swiftly and safely especially on the D2-D4 with Cat blade fitted.

Cheers,
Eddie B.

I am working on a 22 a D2 and a D4 all at the same time and pulled the arm muscle cranking the 22 but it is getting better. I started the pony on one of my D2s a couple of days ago and because it has a fender tank it was a miserable awkward thing to work on. The rope lengths are good information since the D2 and D4 should be the same. Sooooo many toys and not enough time to play with them all. Thanks for the Mainly Magneto name. I have a weak mag on the D4 and may need to send it out. Thanks, Grant.

I've sent two mags to Mainely and both came back like brand new, and working like it too.
