New to discussions, have question I hope someone can answer. I have read that the "Hall Scott" motor company made some 4 cylinder gas engines for some very early Cat 22 and t35 tractors. Can anyone confirm this please? Does anyone have an image or literature about these tractors/engines.
If this is true, are there any still around?

Hi Tony M,

Very interested in your query regarding "Hall Scott" engines used by Caterpillar, I do know that the "Hall Scott" engine that was originaly used in the "2 Ton", was designed especially for the tractor, at Caterpillar's request.

Somewhere here in my extensive caterpillar library, I do have the data concerning the question at hand, however I will try and dig it out and put the details on this board for you.

Thanks very much for your reply. I had the pleasure of proof reading parts of the new "Hall Scott" book produced by SAE, written by Ric Dias. This is where I first learned of this info. Am awaiting the arrival of the book then will post details.

Gentlemen, I am no expert, but it would surprise me very much if Caterpillar used something other than Cat in the Twenty-Two. The Holt Two Ton (T-35)is a different matter. When and why did Hall-Scott go out of the business of manufacturing engines? GWH

Hall Scott being a rather small manufacturer tended to move from market to market as designer E. Hall designed new engines that were more efficient. Some markets they revolutionised and then were out paced by larger manufacturers were, early aircraft engines, railcars, petrol truck-bus engines and petrol marine engines. They left their run to develop the diesel too late and when they did E.J. Hall had moved on and their first diesels were a disaster. Rather than settling and fighting in a market they moved on. WW2 production was bought entirely by the US government for the lend lease act. This put the new management into a false sense of security, it was sold again so power the new owners buses banning the sale to anyone else. Gradualy business dwindled and sold on again in a poor state that led to it producing parts and new electronic components. It gradualy got wound up.

When I find the info of the Cat- Hall Scott deal I will post it.

There was a feature story in the ACMOC issue 54, March/April 2004. "The Story Of Holt's 2 Ton" submitted by Lorry Dunning, Historical Consultant, Davis California.

This was of interest to me. I am restoring a 1924 Holt 2 Ton S/N 70335 with a M 35, S/N 81354 engine.

just got the Holt 2 ton home from the John Mannix sale model MS 35 motor number 30194 tractor number S25175 this tractor has the Holt cut out letters in the radiator side panels and the riveted track frames it has the overhead cam motor but i do not know the make

As soon as I get the Hall Scott book I will post the details that I read some time ago during proofing.

How would I get hold of Issue 54 that you speak of, am a new menber and have not had much time to explore the site/cluc.
