Hi Stuss,
I don't have a service manual for the 2H but in looking at the parts manual I don't see any reason why the whole assembly can't be lifted out once linkage is disconnected and the yokes unbolted from the bottom of the case. Maybe someone that has a 2H can inform us both:) :)

That doesn't read quite right....of course you will have to unbolt the drive pinion flanges, bearings caps for the bevel gear, etc. It appears to be much like the D4 where everything is mounted on the one bevel gear shaft. Not like the later D6's that have the intermediate couplings that allow removal of the steering clutches separately.

Thanks Old Magnet for the reply,I had studied my parts book as well and it looks like it comes out as one unit after steering clutch flange bolts have been removed.I just needed to confirm it.
I have never seen steering clutches removed this way before.
I might see if i can locate a workshop manual may come in handy when i start woking on motor.
Thanks Steve.

Hi, Magnets got it, I used the yokes as lifting eyes, One thing, remember which side the crown gear is on, it will fit either way, I did it on my RD7, fired her up had 1 forward & 5 reverse, I had overhauled it over winter, so it was a few months apart, A friend of mine did the same thing on a Diesel Forty. As far as I know there never was a service manual for the RD,s

Yes, Ken is right....did a search in the Cat Legendary Literature list and there does not appear to be a service manual for the RD's. Closest you can get is the "Servicemen's Reference Book For Cat Diesel Engines" Form #5060A or B dated 1940-1941 with 60 pages. Sort of a summary approach to all the diesel engines of that time.
