Old Cat Home - and a question ?

Hello Guys

Well we fetched the D2 5U #10200, 1952 home today, and in the cold hard light of reality she is still lookin pretty good in my eyes, and is parked pride of place in our main car garage - lordy when my SWMBO gets home there'll be a ruckus . . .

I've attached a picture, she looks pretty standard to me, bout the only thing I can't figure is why there is no track idler, was this an option, or did it fitting/not fitting it depend on something else ??

Anyhow the timing on the pony needs adjusted - theres no power at all. I found plenty of instruction elsewhere on various threads how to do it, but with me being a person who "shouldn't be allowed to turn a wrench" according to my father in law (who is a fine mechanic, now retired) I just can't see how much stuff I'll neeed to take off to sucessfully get it set. I have the aircleaner assembly off, but do I have to take off the air intake and engine bulkhead as well ??

Cheers

Foster, at the time your 5U was made, the top roller was an option. Later, the track frame was lengthened (with many other changes) and the top roller became standard.

Like you, I am not a mechanic. When I had to do some work on my 5U pony motor, I removed the air cleaner, the air cleaner intake, but I don't think I had to remove the dashboard or what you refer to as the "bulkhead".

You have a good looking logging tractor, and I'm glad you showed us photo of it.

Foster,

Do you have all the instruction books for your D2?

You will need 4 different books for your D2:

1 Operation & Maintenance Instructions (one book for all 4U & 5U models)
2 Parts Book - 50 inch gauge 5U1 to 5U13236 (specific to your serial #)
3 Servicemen's Reference Book - Tractor (covers all J & U series models)
4 Servicemen's Reference Book - D3400 Diesel Engine & Starting Engine

The Servicemen's reference books detail what components have to be removed to gain access to each item.

You can find the above books on ebay, either original, reproduction's or copies. The original Servicemen's books do get listed every now and then, but be prepare to pay anywhere between 75 to 100+ USD for a copy as they normally attract strong biding.

Thanks for posting the picture, it looks a great D2? What does SWMBO stand for?

Hello Guys

Well she (SWMBO) has cooled a little now, and I set the timing for the pony. It is still not right so I'll pull the carby off and give it a clean from whoa to goa (hopefully).

Thanks for the heads up on all the manuals, I got a parts book with the machine (the original) and have ordered an operators manual, I'll keep an eye out for the service manuals.

Cheers

Foster,

I've found out in the past, that hauling a tractor on a trailer can disturb sediment \ rust in the fuel tanks, the first time I moved my 9U after buying it this happened.
I had fuel starvation problems, with both the starting engine and the main engine, which necesiated the cleaning of both tanks, flushing the fuel lines, unblocking the fuel transfer pump and replacing the filters.
Are you a member of Chapter 10 in NZ?
