Top shaft of the transmission had a collar come loose and fell down into the gears, locking up the trans. Seems like I have removed half the world to get to the main clutch, still have to at least jack up the cab and remove the batteries to get the dashboard moved. I have several options on lifting/lowering the transmission but does anybody know about how much the transmission weighs? Also, after I remove the main clutch from the flywheel do I have to remove the clutch plates for clearance to remove the transmission? Having fun yet?

Remove the clutch means down to the flywheel. Long way for the transmission to travel to clear the steering clutch pump drive shaft.
Don't know the weight of the transmission but I would guess something in the 1,200 to 1,500 lb range.

also remember the oil tube that is on the side of the trans that goes into the diff. try not to bend it or damage it in any way. i think you bolt a plate to the top of the trans to lift it out. it is well balanced that way.

Yes, there is a suggested lifting plate that mounts in place of the oil fill tower that will keep the trans level. I can post pic if you would like.
KoO, oil tube on the side of the transmission???? are you referring to the oil dip stick that mounts on the rear case (close to trans)??

Correction, the lift plate mounts to the steering lever bracket flange not the oil fill tower flange

I have that picture in the servicemans book and will fab it up. I knew that trans most be heavy as the loop on that plate is 5/8 material.

Just wanted to say I was way off with my weight estimates. Stumbled across some weights in my D5 service manual (not much different from 9U)
Transmission 550 lbs. clutch (oil) 300 lbs.
Hope it's not to late and you went and built that 1 ton+ hoist:)

My project got put on hold for a mess of family reasons. I removed the cab, battery box and dash so I'm real close, just need the time to pull the clutch then transmission. Knowing it weighs around 500# will make it easy for my brothers front loader [on a John Deere 2020] to do the pick.

also reseal everything while you have the trans and cluthc out. also pay close attention to dowel pins on the trans. they have to be tight or oil will leak.
