Old Magnet,
Can you drill the bell housing hole on the D6-9U with the engine still in the tractor, or do you have to remove it? Thanks.

It's pretty tight and I have not drilled one in place myself but I have had feedback of it being done with hole saw and right angle drive drill motor. It probably can be done with a straight drill also but it is a finger and hand breaker if it snags during the process. The tougher part is getting the layout for drilling and getting the hole drilled and taped for the inside lower bolting.

Couple more questions, I have a 70D3311 grader w/a 318 engine (oil clutch)that already has the location for an electric starter machined, drilled & tapped. This looks to be factory work. Is this the same as a D69u as far as starter info. that I can use? I have measured the 5/8 bolt hole distances and they are the same as what is in the diagrams (5" on center) Also the starter pinion on the pony engine engaged the ring gear from the opposite side than the electric starter will, does this mean something else will have to be changed or will 42 MT with cw rotation starter and #3 deh w/proper drive work?? Sorry for so many questions but I need to understand for sure before the $$$$$ starts flying !!!!
Thanks

No problem with the questions:) :)
Same info applies to the grader (although I think it's a different bellhousing than the 9U. Ring gear will accommodate drive from either side. Cat used the same flywheel for both pony and direct start until you get to later models that used bevel gear for pony and straight cut ring gear for the straight tooth starter drives.
Read up on the info for indexing the drive end housing so that the solenoid is mounted up. Same info as D4.
You can also index the DEH to mount the solenoid in the down position but it makes for a pretty awkward installation.

Just as a reminder, you can not use the DEH that normally comes with the 42MT starter. You need to get the special indexed version mentioned in the website information.
