Thanks for the continuing interest, but the bearing supply is taken care of in this case. I hope I don't have to do another engine right away.

My favourite supplier found a shaft that is like new with bearings, though water damaged. The worst damage was to the back main, but I had another that gauged equal to the rest of the set. I ground out the rust poskets and will poloish the journals. I am left with at least as much shaft as would remain after a 0.030" grind. I think it is going to be OK. I still need one rod bearing but I can afford that one from Cat.

I'm picking up parts and gaskets this week, plan to start assembling ASAP. Watch this site for updates.

In another thread, I suggested babbit for pony rods if no inserts can be found. My logic involves the fact that a pony doesn't run all that many hours and a gas engine just doesn't deliver the thrust that a diesel does. It was just a suggestion; others may have a very good argument against it.
