It looks like a giant metal detector, just kidding, as I have no idea what it is as I have never seen anything like it.

I have seen a similiar hook up for pulling 631B scrapers and 46A D8
under difficult conditions such as mud and water. I have also seen pictures of Super C Tournapulls being pulled with a 2U D8.

Catskinner,
Lou has it right. That is what was known as “Snatch Cat”, in my neck of woods anyway. That one is a little more elaborated than what I have seen.

I think what history will show is they started using them with the Old Super C’s because of there weak goose neck. I have seen old pictures where there just used a cable and a labor to hook and unhook it, which I think later lead to what you have in the picture.

It appears they are stripping topsoil.

Since I won't be able to get on here later tonight, I will give the answer now. Lou is right. It was used to pull turnapulls at the Kanopolis Dam in KS. It was also used with 3 other D8's to pull a Electric shovel from Langley, KS., the railhead, to the dam site. A distance of about 5-6 miles. I will post some more pics later on in the week.

Have never seen anything even similar.

Don't quite understand the set up
was this utilized as a cushion or "reflex" mechanism to allow the tractor to move forward pulling against the cushion of the springs and then the springs "reflex" and tend to multiply the pulling effect (maybe something similar to a spring shank chisel plow)??

Can somebody fill in some more details for the old dumb ass down here in the Delta. :(
