Cat 60 Question:

More

Gentlemen,
I have just restored a Cat 60 tractor as of last year and would appreciate some information.
It is an Agricultural tractor, serial #PA13515 and to my knowledge came off the assembly line in December of 1931. It is also the second to the last gas tractor before the introduction of the Diesel 60. My question to you is, "Can this tractor be the first 60 to be painted Highway yellow or the second tractor, third, etc"? On December 7, 1931, Corporate Cat changed the colors on all tractors after this date.
Is there anyone I could contact in Peoria, or can anyone answer this question.

Any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated!!!

Thank You,
Frank Dzen

Other tractors:
1937 Cat 22 wide gauge
1949 Super A Farmall

Hello, I was wondering what happened to that tractor! I remember it being for sale a while back and wondered of its whereabouts. The only advice I can give you is look for a date stamped on the top rear of the engine block near the oil pressure gauge. Most 60's have at least a month and year stamped there. I think there is also a date near the right brake adjustment cover, on the top. Hope this helps. Caterpillarman

Frank-

Your 60 is a very late model and therefore I believe it could be yellow. However, it is also my understanding from different texts that I have read that dealers were somewhat reluctant to accept the new color scheme in 1931 indicating that their customers were not "yellow" tractor people. Thus, it is written in a few books on caterpillar tractors that dealerships could, for a limited time after the official color change, order tractors with the old gray and red color scheme. This further blurs the point in time when tractors should be gray or yellow. In the end, I think since your tractor is near the transition that either color would be correct and if you do not have an inclination as to the actual original color, you could probably pick whichever you prefer.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the response. During the restoration of this 60, I encountered the original highway yellow paint as the last layer of paint before bare steel on the ham case, final drives, and under all the roller grease on the main rollers. I believe this tractor was painted highway yellow out of the factory. My main question is to find out if it's the first or one of the first tractors to be painted highway yellow. The main rollers are the original rollers on this tractor, therefore it's truly not a question of it's original color. The tractor has been painted highway yellow with black trim.

I do appreciate the info thus far, it's a great help.

Hi Marco,

According to the Caterpillar Tractors book "Little 10 to Big 10", by Peter J. Longfoot. On page 16, it states that the last tractor serial number was PV 7559. It is stated that it would appear that the last 500 or so were painted "Highway Yellow". So with that being said, My guess is that your tractor was grey with red trim. I hope this information is of some help.

Nice Job Frank!
You going to bring it to Zaragary farm in July for the HECA show?
I want to bring my D2 and hang a sign on it "Alaska of Bust" and see if it can hitch a ride to anchorage :)

I am going to start setting up my rotation out of Prudho so I can make it this year.

You can bet I'll be at Zagray Farms for the National Heca Event! I plan on bringing my Cat 60 and 22. Hope to see you there along with other friends.
There will be many new changes this year at the show ground, lots more to see and enjoy!

See you there,
