Hello,

When I asked this question about 10 years ago the suggestion (attached) was to use NAPA #600-3035 ring gear and 330-3248 starter.  A quick look at the NAPA web site shows it is still available for about US$40. I needed to machine a recess around the flywheel to match the ID of the ring gear with a tight press fit. I heated the ring gear and pressed it on and it works fine. I machined a plate to adapt the starter to the available holes in the bell housing. This had to be done several times to get the gear mesh correct.

Gary, this is what I used. The starter and ring gear came with the 22 when I bought the basket case. Having the engine out made is easy to design an adapter plate. Engine is still out so I haven't tried it yet.

Thanks for the help. I have an original starter for a 22. I am hoping to find and original ring gear if possible for a machine I just bought. The other 22 I have has a modified starter assembly.

How much small is the NAPA ring gear? Is the pitch diameter correct for the Cat 22 starter? It seems you are saying an eccentric plate had to be made to match the starter to the ring gear. Is that correct? I'm not sure from the data given, but I think I would prefer to bore the ring gear and not mess with the flywheel. There's an awful lot of ring/pinion starters out there. I would keep looking if I was concerned with keeping as many parts stock as possible. Measure up the center-to-center distance required and work from there. And bear in mind that the 22 had about the easiest starting engine that ever was as I recall from long ago.

Yes the factory starter I bought from a guy in Oregon years ago
would not fit the ring gear on my 1st cat 22.The cat had too big of a ring gear and the previous owner lost the modified starter. After a lot of searching found a 2 bolt starter with adaptor plate to make it work. The 22 I bought yesterday doesn't have a ring gear. This 22 has dozer blade and awkward to crank. Would like to scare up parts before I pull engine. Thanks
