a semi retired boilermaker i know described one of his first jobs in the open cut mines at Moranbah Qld climb the boom of the drag-line with a spray bottle of soapy water, a electrode holder, spare rods and a grinder as you climb spray the welds any that made bubbles you would grind out and re-weld the boom was pressurised with compressed air.

he reckoned it was great "fun" when they would pick up just the bucket and the boom would drop about 5m and your ankles would try and meet your ears. they weren't supposed to work the machine at all while boom maintenance was in progress.
