Allen Top for Caterpillarsam

More

Caterpillarsam asked for some photos of the “Allen Tops” that we love out here in the West. I have seen photos of them on East coast tractors as well, mainly on Euclids. Many Allis Chalmers were equipped with them here as well. Beats a flimsy umbrella or nothing at all. Made your day more pleasant while consuming plenty of dust.
I tried to find an old electric top with fan, same as ones used on old combines with no luck. Old hands swore by them, not at them. The fan blew dust away and kept you cool! JM

similar to what many wheeled tractors have. it sure beats sitting in the sun and yes better than a umbrella. ours has a proper roll top scrub canopy as it was used for snigging timber by our cousin. it rattles and amplifies noise some what but beats getting belted by saplings and limbs. one day i'll fit a muffler and fix the noise issue.

That looks like one that Glen Ghilotti had on a 36A if I recall correctly. I thought it looked pretty good. Fiberglass top?

Cheers,
Neil

Neil: I think he did have one on the 36A used for drawbar work. Yes, fiberglass and lasts forever. I wanted to have new ones made, but never got that far. Copying the base mounts would be interesting too. JM

Hi, Neil.
Glen had one canopy on a 36A D8 that was wood framed with white canvas stretched over it. Nice looking set-up. It was fitted to the tractor down here on the ranch prior to one of the shows - - - - - - - AND wiped off that same D8 while passing under 'low-flying' bridge by the same man who fitted it here on the ranch within the first TEN miles of taking it back to Petaluma. Guess which bridge.

I don't know if you can imagine this but Glen, to put it politely, was not a happy little camper, especially when this man tried to tell him that the wind blew it off. Glen's head mechanic found the debris of the canopy alongside that same bridge the next day.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Hmmm Deas, I swore it had a soft lid on the one I was referring to; turns out it WAS one of the wooden lids with vinyl cover the shop crew made(he gave me one to install on a D8 that I do not own YET). It did have the legs and mounts for an “Allen” originally.
Darn it, I cannot pull the photo up. Its the D8 he pulled the Marvin Landplane with.

Hi, juiceman.
Yep. That one was last seen as what was once a very nice canopy on the side of the road near a certain bridge on Highway 101 Northbound. Your favorite drawbar pin and key collector was the 'star' of the show.

Itza pretty dark photo but that D8 looks to be in reasonable shape. Are you still going after it?

***I am not after Glen's D-8 36A, but the moment has come that a very nice late model 14A has been offered to me by some great friends. It originally came from across the road from the former TENCO tractor co. in Pleasant Grove, CA which is only 20 minutes south of here. Photos when I acquire it... JM***
