Apple farming has been rough on some friends of mine. Their operation had to move, and space was lacking.
Anyways, they didn’t need this D2 5J anymore, so they asked me to give it a new home.

My question would be about the small roller guards?
I have seen rock guards and regular sized, say for mud, but not these tiny buggers. It seems they are factory, I felt and looked expecting some sign of torch or plasma marks; nothing indicating they were owner modified.
Is there anything in the parts book?

Anyone that knows me, is aware that I have never had any fondness for a “J”. After I re-purpose the PTO, I might just donate it to charity, but then again, I don’t believe in tractors that don’t function. I might just have to button it up first. JM

I also have a J model with those small rock guards, it was a T2 loader, I thought I had seen them in a parts book, but now cannot find it in any book??

Yep those are the early button-head fitting guards, not full dirt guards like you would normally see. I just checked both my J series parts books too and for some reason cannot find them either, but I did get a set of them on camera when I did a walk-around on this first model year 3J a few years ago -

Well happy papa’s day to all of you dads. Juiceman can’t leave anything alone, so after rinsing off a few crawlers from last weeks show, I decided to give the 5J some sickbay time; swapped out the mag, checked fluids, etc. made some steering and brake adjustments.
I scared myself, as this one fired off on the very first pull.
Drove it around to loosen things up a bit, had to readjust the steering.
I thought I had major issues with the main clutch, I will have to look into this one, as the engagement is ass backwards…
Also I will have to block off the oil cooler; ir wound be a shame to cut the steel lines and loop them.
I will level the customized seat and replace the cushions
and call it good I’m guessing. I might just keep it now!

Haha JM, it's your Achille's heel - getting your hands on the iron. Still, nice looking machine to have in the collection. Is there anything inside that muffler? I'd be curious because sometimes adding a chamber can make the sound worse if there are no baffles in it

Neil: The donor is looking down the end of his nose now. OOPS! Considering how many years this thing sat idle, even I was amazed I got it going in short time. (It sat outside for over a decade I am told). Maybe I will find some side panels and the idler guards too. The "wanna be A-C" muffler thingy actually works great. it is about 1/4" thick material, not tinny. Very quiet.
Perhaps I am most happy about, is that I did not have to go out and purchase anything. I already had a spare mag; seat cushions galore here still (thanks Francisco); and as usual, a superstitious thing, I will always try to start with the ROPE that comes with the tractor. It worked! JM
