Colour for Caterpillar twenty?

I believe the tag on the backside of the seat shows the serial#. It’s a brass plate about the size of a piece of paper. I’m not sure about the two tons with the metal bucket seats though. If that one is missing, there should be a tag on the right side of the transmission below the shifter that might have it.

Sorry, I do not, from memory I just had the paint mixed at a store, it was a regular auto enamel, not a 2 pack. I definitely would not paint a 1928 built 2 Ton the color of that sample card ACMOC supplies, it is not right based on the old paint I found on my tractor, and if your Cat 20 was built around the same time, there is a chance it was painted the same color as my 2 Ton.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that Cat bought a bunch of surplus WW1 Battleship Grey that got used on a run of tractors, which made sense to me, I mean did every Model T Ford have the exact same black paint color when new? Looking at the serial number book I see Cat built around 5,000 of the 2 Ton tractor just in 1927 and 1928, plus around 4,000 of the L and PL Twenty, so they were using a lot of paint, and there might have been differences between the factories.

Plus at that time, Cat were starting to discount certain models like the 2 Ton to get them out in the market, so here in Australia farmers went crazy for them, as soon as they were unloaded off the ship, they were immediately delivered to the customer, so if savings could be achieved in the factory, I could see Naval surplus Battleship Grey paint being used.

Thank you Mike, I can see the paint here and there on my 1928 20 L294 it is much closer to the colour you have with a very obvious blue hint to it unlike the acmoc grey which does not look blue at all to me

I think you must be right that more then one grey was used (as I’ve heard many people agree on battleship grey) although interesting both our tractors are the same year but factories were on opposite side of the country.

very nice looking 2 ton you have nonetheless
