Hey-
OK-my initial post sent before I was ready, so ignore it-I am starting again and will hopefully delete the first one that OM replied to. This is what I get bouncing between phone and laptop.....

I have a chance to buy for scrap within 100 miles two of these graders. #4161 is a parts machine, and the guy purchased that way-never ran for him and doesnt know why it was set out for scrap.

The other machine #359 was running a few weeks ago doing misc. road and drive maintenance grading. I've seen / heard it running a few times. The owner thinks maybe the injector cracked a piston head or something in a cylinder failed. This one I think is an electric start conversion and the #4161 still has its starting engine. I believe the #359 has its starting engine on a pallet. He was talking about selling the #359 a while ago due to not being big enough-at that point I was considering buying it then for a snow plow at the farm.

I have looked into the Tech Pages and cannot determine very well what engine parts may be compatible with my D4400 2TD4. Fuel tower-injectors-starting pinion set up-radiator-water pump-fuel system.... etc.

For scrap price how can you go wrong?? Wish we had some scrap Cats here in Kansas.

Well, I can’t argue your point, even with scrap prices up.

Looking into it more here on ACMOC I think the engines are D311’s. Not much matching my D4 as far as I can tell. Good match for a D2 I think.

With both machines maybe I can get the #359 operational. The guy that has them is top notch-I’m hoping to get over to see them tomorrow.

even if you get it working and on sell it yourself. never know you might be able to horse trade it for a machine our parts you need.

I might add .. in an earlier post on the D318 in a No. 12 Motor Grader was slightly different from D318's built for other applications. I'm not 100% sure but I think it had to do something with the crank.
I believe it was Old Magnet that made the post... I know the 9T's with the D311 are different but worth looking into.
 here are some like No.212 Motor graders that are of the same ilk.

Interesting location for that starter motor. Could you get a shot of the other side so we can see how it's arranged? Doesn't seem to be anywhere near the flywheel. Perhaps it engages with the existing pinion assembly somehow?

I saw one like that on RB once - long gone now. It had a V belt pulley on the starter gear (Bendix) and a V pulley on the idler gear from the pony that drove the counter gear to the pinion clutch. The one I saw looked very much like that but had no safety shrouds over the belt n pulleys.
