Anyone build up and machine Rollers?

Yup, that looks like pretty good math all right. My tractor holds a grade a lot easier than it used to. I had chalked it up to the fact that its got a new suspension spring at about the same time! I handles about like a five-roller frame now.

Thanks for settling that nagging question I'd pondered for several minutes over the last few years.

No problem Jack but now of course I'm pondering whether I should go the same route as you for better longitudinal stability : ) This is on a dozer tractor so it would benefit from that additional stability. The other tractor is to be the drawbar machine so it would want to "stay up in the air". I'll probably just go with what I have though as I already have the steel

-just adding to what Jack mentioned, 7018 does work great (liquid air)
-quite tough and durable
-easy to apply smooth beads (DC reverse)
-prefer to run stringers to minimize hot spots...

Hi Neil, the large front idler will make a big difference. The reason I didn't use them was because mine is set up as a logging Cat. I can push stuff around but grading is a challenge. Theoretically mine would be out in the heavy woods where being a little more nimble around trees would be an advantage so I kept the small idler.
I had a 4 roller 5u with the longer transmission housing and it was easy to hold grade with. The big idler just makes it that much better

Hi Scott, yes looking forward to using them : ) I'm currently welding new runners that the idler assemblies mount on (the channel iron) but since I don't know how to weld, I'm sure it's going to be a total disaster and I'll have no-one but myself to blame! : ) Do I need to refurbish those idlers at all or are they good to go?
I also opened a fraud case against that shipper who just decided to charge me some more $, 7 months down the road.... I don't know if it was the trucker or NMU Worldwide because no-one's talking, so I'm running it through the bank, who in their wisdom decided to apply the charge, even after I told them it was fraudulent. Oh well, closing my account and moving $ elsewhere might make them pay attention....

Cheers,
Neil

7018 are a low hydrogen rod and arent as user friendly as 7016TC both are good buffer layers under hardfacing
mig wires are naturally low hydrogen although there is a specifc controlled hydrogen wire.

the secret is warm the rods and the parts before welding a old oven is good for this and has uses when fitting gears and bearings too particularly for shrink fits.
by pre heating the roller you will get less hot spots as the whole part will absorb the heat it also gives less cracking as the heat is more even and the cooling can be controlled better

I couldn't say what condition the idlers are in, I never really checked them out that close although they looked pretty good. Thats to bad about the freight company but I've heard of it before
