977 H Turbo was created by leadfoot04
Hello All
I have a 977H with the D333 engine, was running fine digging a pond and something went through the turbo and bent all the nozzle fins closed. I took it to be rebuilt and was told that the housing was too far gone to get it to seal.  The only new turbo I could find is $3500 (not sure if its even available now). I just hate to put that kind of money in a $5000 machine running.  I am not above adapting another turbo if it is sized correctly. I know nothing about sizing a turbo. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!!

Check the glow plugs if your engine has them, there might be a tip that broke off one of them. That or broke a valve head off, you would have really heard that though.

which side is bent the hot side or the cold side?

if its the hot side which is the turbine side it has come internally from the engine which is not good. like rome suggested a glow plug tip or a bolt or something has come loose and eaten the turbine. check everything is were it should be.

if its the cold side which is the compressor side then its come from the air cleaner still not good but easier and cheaper fix.
once you repair the turbo of course.

replace any intake hoses and check all piping for damage, check the air filter housing and the element replace the element.

I found a piece of cast iron about the size of a pea in the turbo when I took it apart.

It had the fins on the nozzle ring ( thats what the guy at the turbo shop called it) folded over.

the turbo will be made by garret, honeywell, air reaserch etc see if you can find thier part numbers as you may find parts that way. there should be a manufactures tag on it somewhere many of these sort of parts are not made directly by cat but made for them. turbos are sized by nozzel diameter and flowrate.
