Good luck on the citric acid, I had good results with it on a radiator core. If you can it helps to circulate the stuff. A small yard fountian pump or small sump pump works fine.

there is such a animal as national pipe straight aka NPS. but yes some bungs on some machines use a normal bolt thread it really depends on what the manufacturer wanted to use or could source at the time. and yes most cat equipment of the same era would use the same size bungs in similar locations.

I am aware of NPS but you talked about NPT which is very unusual for a drain plug (or BSPT). Most drain plugs use a parallel thread with a sealing washer on a flange face or an o-ring to seal them. I can't recall ever seeing a drain plug on anything that uses a tapered thread unless someone has retrofitted it later. That includes Cats, other earth-moving equipment, stationary transmissions etc.

i have seen equipment with parallel and taper thread bungs it just depends on application but yes most drain bungs are straight thread and have a sealing washer & flange.

our old ford 4000 has taper thread drain plugs in the trans and differential, the fill bungs are flanged and gasket seal though
